Protecting knees from hard ground / grass burns (I know.....)

Hence WTF does the ref need them - unless he's going to celebrate a penalty call with a big knee slide over towards the 4th official?

and into the lottery we go, given how Croatia were being called best in the bottom half of the draw this is mixing it all up.

Vlad is having a hell of an impact on this tournament 😉

last man, and a deliberate cynical tackle, stopping a clear goal, from behind. Shirley a red all day long?

because it was a genuine attempt to play the ball, the penalty (and should be goal, let's be frank) is considered enough punishment

It is no longer an automatic red card if a player or goalkeeper brings down an opponent while acting as the last line of defence; where a genuine attempt has been made to play the ball, officials will be allowed to give a penalty and only book the offender.

But deliberate fouls - including holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity - will still result in dismissal.

They’re just explaining that now on TV. Fairy nuff.

(He still should be off the pitch IMO, he came through the attackers legs but accept if that’s been the rule-change.)

Nope, but I am qualified ref (although no longer active) and I find i can enjoy the game more by actually knowing the laws - so i read the LOAF and IBD's every year to see what's changed.

Well Kasper looks the more relaxed, his Dad doesn't though

that was a bit grey though - but refs are instructed I think to only issue red cards in these situations where it is a clear an obvious professional foul. Clean through on goal, you don't want to remove the last ditch tackle completely, because sometimes it is a magnificent thing, and if it goes wrong to be sent off for attempting it would be bad.

I reckon it was obvious the intent was to bring him down, even if he kidded on he was going for the ball.

whoa that was tense, best shootout I've seen in a long time, thought Kasper had them out of trouble there but that last miss was terrible

I found that all a bit dull.

Isnit worth watching the rest ??

Possibly, but there has to be 'no chance' of making a proper tackle

FAQ's at bottom of the FA page

Right result for me. Croatia have more to offer through the next rounds. Sure they scraped through this evening but I’d rather watch them than Denmark any day of the week.

least with the dull games ye get a shootout I guess! Great if you've not got a vested interest, brutal if ye have!

Hard luck Casper.

Hopefully Jurgen Klopp was watching for examples of decent keepers .

I enjoyed the qualifiers, but today both games were dullz...

Biscuits gives away a penalty. In the dying seconds of the game both he and the massive **** Ramos are dragged down in the area and don’t get a penalty. Cue running after the ref screaming for a penalty

The massive **** Ramos on his knees in tears at the end.

I've watched both of them cheating their way through countless games, sneaky fouls, getting opposition players booked, diving etc.

Seeing them miserable, beaten and on their way home is a moment of beauty.

Well said DD....I was at a bbq yesterday, but saw the last 15mins and penalties.  Loved it!

Mexico v Brazil next, which will be interesting and potentially another exciting game.  After being beaten by the Swedes, I wonder if Mexico can get their mojo back to give mighty Brazil a run for their money?

Bravissimo - there was indeed a beautiful irony to seeing Ramos exiting the competition having failed to be awarded a penalty from being essentially rugby tackled 😀

Agree with DD, those two cheating spaniards deserve zero sympathy from any football fan.

But is there currently anyone worse than that utter cheating slime ball Luis Suarez?? Just hope he gets his comeuppance one day, he's an embarrassment to football.

pretty average stuff from Brazil, no cutting edge from Mexico in front of goal (ran out of steam towards the end) Neymar rolling around again like he's been shot by a sniper.

Brazil just scored in a good game so far. Open game but Brazil creating more unsurprisingly.

Mexico just seem to want to have one touch too many too many times – that isn't going to work against a team of Brazil's quality.

WT actual F? So the Mexican picked up the ball from between his legs and that happened? Or did I miss some actual contact?

As a non football fan who is really enjoying what I've seen can I ask what happened to all the Russian thugs killing overseas fans?

And if Neymar is in such pain that he rolls about crying but can suddenly get back to his feet, then why isn't Chris Froome using what his doc is spraying on his boot?

Putin clearly has the kind of control over the local population that a Western democracy could only dream of, and doesn't want any unpleasant scenes marring a home WC.

We know that the hooligans exist, and are well organised, so clearly they have been told in no uncertain terms that there will be no repeat of Marseille, or the Gulag awaits.

Well I'd certainly back myself in a scrap with the Brazil team there, it would be like watching carving through a cast of extras in an action film!!

So after a round of shocks in the group stage, the 2nd round is mostly going to form (bar Russia)  there's usually a couple of shocks... which leaves Japan to beat Belgium as the only potential remaining shock in this round...

Sweden & Switzerland could go either way (I suspect all the way to penalties, both teams are solid & workmanlike) & Colombia & England is too close to call, Colombia I would say are slight favourites due to England's abysmal record in the knock out stages.

As much as neymar is a cheating fanny, replays have shown the Mexican player stood on his ankle whilst retrieving the ball...
