I keep hearing that Liebour (sic) are doing nothing to "stop the boats" so why is this new law, now in action, not being made more of in the news?

Who own the media? What do they want? How does this story help them obtain that?
That's why
Well for a start this is the first case and the sentencing is only happening today, with it being widely reported in the on-line media and presumably tomorrows printed rags. However, unless it is actually stopping people bringing boats its all for show. It will always be possible to get someone to drive the boats: offer them free passage, chuck them cash, wave a gun at them, threaten a relative.
In the same way that Farage getting upset about a "busy" day for boat crossings got wide coverage but the fact that overall numbers are massively down doesn't get a mention
its on the front page of the BBC website - at least for me.
below 3 separate articles of Belfast and Belfast-related "civil unrest"; Henry Nowak protestors; Ukraine war; Ben Stokes and Dr Who.
Its ahead of anything football related, and "is another heatwave on the way"
Because very few people actually care very much about things that don't effect them, and in fact the best outrage to be cross about is exactly the things that don't effect you, because it's consequence free. Small boats is just a vehicle for discontent. The same as criticizing Starmer for the time it took the 2 child cap to be lifted, It's a way to express dissatisfaction with the political party you don't like, or don't feel represents you.
Small boat crossing could stop immediately and it wouldn't raise a whisper, folks would simply move seamlessly to the next outrage.

We have become so acclimatised to clickbait that we don't react to anything unless it is clickbait. We don't seem to particularly care what the clickbait is, just as long as it's there to be outraged by. When was the last time you heard people say, "Yeah, things are generally okay"?

Disappointingly my proposal to reduce, even completely eliminate, the issue of small boats crossings overnight, by simply buying the people smugglers much bigger boats didn't get the support I'd hoped.
it does not suit the aims of the far right propaganda machine

Chris Grayling could organise a shipping company without any boats to run it!
A similar solution is to allow anyone to file their assylum claim at "any" UK Embassy/Consulate (except their own country) and wait to see the outcome. Instantly removes the incentive to risk your life and thus the smuggling trade, and if people don't meet the criteria you don't need to deport them and face the costs of appeals etc because they aren't "here" in the first place. Prioritise cases with good reasons for coming to the UK (like a family link, relevant skills, good english) and you'll not need to provide hotels etc either to house cases under review.
Politicians are scared of this option because it will be argued it is being weak on immigration whilst it would virtually instantly solve 80% of the asylum seeking "problem". It actually just needs someone very sensible to orate why its the solution and cabinet members with guts to make it happen.
As others have said it doesn’t suit the non dom media owners
But it is in the news, you posted a link to it. Oh and "Captains" is a bit of an exaggeration.
Because there's another "captain" along in 10 minutes. They're not criminal masterminds and locking up 1 orn2 for a couple of years will have no effect.

Correct. These guys were victims of the smuggling trade just as much as the others in the boats.
Simple. Most meeejah is owned by right wing xenophobic shitbag billionaires that don't want their message that its out of control and Britain isn't Britain unless its 100% populated by white racists (except without the wealth) diluting by anything else.
^ ^ ^ yep ^ ^ ^
I’ve been listening to the BBC Podcast To Catch a King.
It’s pretty interesting to hear how it all works but one thing discussed is that the people steering the boats are the lowest level of smuggler, they are refugees who have been offered a cheaper crossing or payment, and might do several crossings to save up enough money as they have been witnessed jumping into the water before leaving French waters so the patrol boats pick them up and take them back to France
So arresting them isn’t likely to be a deterrent or reduce crossings as they are expendable, with little more value to the smuggling network than a boat passenger. But I suppose it sounds good in the news.
Investigating people you can see/grab can lead to information gathering on the more powerful/illusive people involved.

Has been the problem for the last 10 years. It seems surprisingly hard for any politician to have that elusive combination of guts, common sense and ability to speak clearly.
Or, if you were cynical, you might think that regardless of your political party/government, it's handy to have a convenient scapegoat to roll out as a distraction when the heat is on your other policies, and so it is in no ones interest to solve it.
But it is in the news, you posted a link to it.
Did i say it wasn't in the news? Or did i say why isn't it being made more of?

Who owns the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and Sky? Who owns the Mirror, the Express, the Guardian, the Star and the FT?
