Picked these (Mission 760i) and an Onkyo receiver up the other day for 40 euro. Not critically listened to them yet, but they certainly don't seem to get in the way of the music yet vs modern bookshelf speakers or my DIY ones either.

Mission 760i look back

Got a Marantz tuner from late 70's connected to and old (but not retro) Yamaha 5.1 amp with some Cerwin Vega speakers in my kitchen / dining room.

My Wharfdale Diamond 9.5's are also old.... but not vintage.

When you see the "thrift store" bargains the Yanks get - Sansui / Marantz / Technics, for very little...... dust off, new pots and caps, LED replacements etc.... And then how much they go for. My Gawd. A friend has an old Marantz amp restored, something like 20w per channel but jesus it's got some power to it. 20 actual watts as opposed to the 150w "power" they market now!

they certainly don’t seem to get in the way of the music

They do if you put them in front of the speakers you're using.

At home we still user the ARCAM Alpha amp, DENON CD Player and a DENON Tuner (no DAB). The turntable - a Linn Axis still gets used. Bought late 80's. The cassette deck was given away and replaced with a Chrome Audio device. Speakers are JPW P1s which really need to be replaced!

A Linn turntable bought in the '80s the cheapest must have been about 1.5 k a lot of dosh back then, do you notice a huge difference from a Rega for eg at a 1/4 of the price?

Don't own a CD player (in fact, I don't have any way of playing them since the PS3 died), as I've never bought any CDs. But I was considering picking up a semi decent cassette deck to check out some of the hundreds of mixtapes I've got stashed at my dad's. Then found out they all went down the tip! Gutted doesn't do it justice. If only he'd just kept the box inserts (doubt there were many that were properly written out though).

Bugger.

No photos, but I have a Logic DM101 t/table with Zeta tonearm and Audio Technica MC cartridge, Rotel RC870 preamp into Crimson monobloc poweramps, with Trio LS-770 three-way speakers on Foundation stands, Denon DCD1500 CD player and Aiwa AD-F770 cassette deck.
All are roughly 1982-4.
I also have a Minidisc deck that looks identical to DezB’s! Mine’s an MDS-JB940.
Fantastic deck, all sorts of editing functions, auto fade-in/out with control of fade length for example, and titles can be added with a computer keyboard plugged in.
Edit - these are the speaker, marked Kenwood, but were Trio here...

Logic t/table, but with a different arm. Not mine...

Denon CD player...

Rotel preamp...

Aiwa cassette recorder...

Those speakers and amps look ace, and I especially love the vertically facing controls of tape deck too!

AR EB101 turntable from around '82 still in use with a Rotel amp and Marantz CD52 CD player (bought with my student grant - some of you might have to Google that ;o)

Have just ordered a pair of Monitor wireless transmitter/receivers to play with.

I'll try and get a couple of pics of my system up tonight. It's a TRIO turntable, amp and tape deck/tuner linked to a pair of Wharfdale floor standing speakers. All early 70's and still pumping out awesome sounds.

Here's my Dual amp and tuner from the early 80's, above is a Rega CD player from the 21st century. I know, how quaint!

Was it just a marketing ploy to pay extra but everyone who bought a Marantz cd player got the se version. Good quality stuff from Marantz my cd player 30 years old

@ gofasterstripes - that Aiwa deck is very good, the layout of the controls is really ergonomic, although they do collect dust! It has Dolby B and C, with three heads so that it’s possible to monitor the recording as it’s being made, and it has an auto-bias system, so it can be set up to get the best from any given tape, although I used to use chrome and metal tapes usually from Maxell and TDK. It even has a plug-in IR remote, which makes operation even easier for the inherently lazy like me.

Rega Planar II deck here, with glass platter.

AR Cam amp

Celestion speakers.

Yamaha tape deck. (Went to Tottenham Court Road for that!)

Bought around 1985. Still used.

@redmex, no the SE’s were better. Can’t remember the exact differences. I demo’d The 65SE at length but decided on the 80

Can't work out how to get the direct link from the imgur android app anymore, so can't manage to post pics.

However, currently listening to Spirit Of Eden on my Dual CS-505 turntable, through my Denon PMA255UK amp (too modern to qualify for this thread) and out of my JBL Control 5 speakers.

Naim 72/140 and a Rega Planar 2. Bought the amps in 1993, and the turntable (secondhand) a few years later. Still gets plenty of use...

Here's my 1980-ish Optonica SM-7100, now powering the garage sound system with input from a Chromecast Audio

Originally paired with some AR-93s but now through a pair of KEF K130s - late 80s, I think.

The Planar 3 which originally went with them now feeds a Linn Classik and a pair of Linn Kans.

<edit IMGBB wasn't working, switched to Flikr>

Nice pic of the Trio stuff Beagleboy. I've got my Dad's old setup which he bought in 1978 i think (minus tape deck). Deck works well, but the amp and tuner went pop. Been meaning to have the amp looked at. Infact none of it is currently in use.

I've got several other turntables/bits on the go including three Technics 1210 MK5Gs but no pics currently.

The sofa does somewhat take away from the speakers. Some see this as a positive.

Space-heateresque ELS 57 seen here in a much plainer location. Hadn’t photographed before because it’s not yet hooked up to its amp. Or where it should be.

Keeping the Quad theme going..

1979 Quad 405 - my Dads, (bought when I was 3) - stripped down and serviced & upgraded by me a couple of years ago

Snell E/ii speakers - 1984 (ish) - bought via the hifi equivalent of STW a couple of years ago

All that old-skoolness balanced by being fed by a Rasperry pi with an IQAudio PI_DAC+ DAC and running Volumio2.

The end result - I've yet to hear a hifi system that I prefer the sound of* - and yet it's all controllable via remote computer / iphone, does spotify connect streaming so in theory is voice controllable by alexa etc.

* - partly/mostly because once I got to a point I was happy I stopped looking / listening to other stuff and just enjoy what I've got.

I've just added this to my modest collection:

It's been further modified beyond the remit of the Ishawata's spec'.
It's 23 years old and sounds fantastic.

All my audio gear is ‘vintage’ 😂

These are the nearest, found in the street on the way home from a crazy weekend. It was the icing on a delicious cake.

Know nothing about them but they sound good and look cool.
