We've talked about this disaster so let's put our hands in our pockets via our beloved forum. Can those at STW towers set something up for online donations from us lot? What do you think?

I think ourmaninthenorth should put his ensuite to some good use and turn it into a Japanese themed donation grotto. A scouse one with a condolence book to sign

What purpose would it serve to have one rather than just going through the normal channels?

Plus the normal channels that are registered will get gift aid I expect.

Can we not have a 'thread of condolence'?

Jesus tonight. Okay okay. Just thought a team effort would be nice.

Didn't expect a bollocking.

Not meaning to be insincere, but aren't the Japs a very wealthy nation, barring the recession (which we're involved with, too btw)?

Its not that I don't feel really sorry for the folk affected - it IS terrible - but I'd rather my work gave me a fortnight off to go help clean up the mess than throw money at them. Oh wait, just remembered the nuclear thingy... Maybe I'll just continue to be fascinated by the videos.

Heard today that their national debt is something approaching 200% of GDP, so yes, they are wealthy, but wealthy in a way that a rich man (or woman) with a 5 gram a day coke habit, a huge mortgage, car on HP and five or six maxed out credit cards is wealthy. I.e. not.

Right. Does this mean I have to part with some of my fat bonus?

It will not be long until their national debt hits 230% of GDP, but some pundits reckon they can afford it as they have a very different mentality to us in the west with regards to saving in their country.

The Japanese government can rely upon its citizens' desire to save rather than have to go cup in hand to the international bond markets.

Bollocks - there's plenty of British people who need help before we start throwing money at them.

Have you had a "road to Damascus" experience derek_starship ?

Or is it just poor Africans without a pot to piss in who you begrudge receiving any charity, whilst wealthy Japanese with pale skin and nice gadgets deserve more consideration ?

Let's hope it's the former.

Funny that comparison should be made. I was wondering what effect all of this may have on donations to Comic Relief. I almost expect Comic Relief to announce a pot of funding for Japan on Friday.
