My elderly mum has given up her car (after writing it off in a flood!) . The car is now gone and I have the private plate on a retention certificate.
Its a P1 xxx number and I think could be worth £5000+ (brokers are asking £10k for R1 numbers)
There is a McLaren P1 so i think its desirable.
Any thoughts on the best way to advertise? FB marketplace (Ha Ha) and gumtree are free. I can't see easily what ebay fees are.
Thanks 🙂
I'd be joining some McLaren (if there are any) or Pistonheads forums and advertising there if you really think that route is a goer.
If I'm reading it right there is only one P1 on the roads in the UK at the moment (plus 10 SORNd) so fairly slim chance that the "xxx" of the plate matches the owner's initials 😂
There's a "rent a supercar" club called the P1 club - worth asking them?

There are many R1 motorbikes, but not many P1 cars (especially relative to the number of P1 plates) and of course the last 3 digits are very important for value. I'd definitely lower your expectations significantly, generally prefix style 5 digit plates aren't particularly valuable unless they are really special. Worth getting Regtransfers to give you a value as they list it on your behalf anyway, but beware they often inflate values to get you to list with them and it could take years to find a buyer. If you want a quick sale Collecting cars do plate auctions.
Be sure when selling not to give people a photo of the V750/V778 number/document since they can use that to assign the plate to themselves without any other info needed so scammers will often try to get one.
Not sure why I'm being cautious about revealing the plate, since as soon as I advertise I'm revealing it.
Its P1 ROS
Fully aware about the revealing too much about the V778 as it can be easily used.
Collecting cars allow you to auction off number plates. I very much doubt you'd get more than £500 for your plate though, unless you happen to find a p1 owner with those initials. The 10k listings on brokers last for decades at a time with no bites.
This site has hundreds of p1 plates for £408

5 Grand to 408 quid?
That's a P1SSR
P1 ROS, might be worth hunting around for ginger hungarians?
If it’s NGU, the penguin house at London Zoo would be a good bet 🤣
I did some research into this, my almost new car had a vanity plate. Value estimates were £650 ish apart from one insane company that said thousands. T29RAT. In the end I listed with the company with second largest number of reviews on trustpilot as they had the clearest billing structure, most were super extra vague on charges which always makes me sus.
I keep meaning to put something on pistonheads for the rat car crowd thanks for the remind!
Oh yeah and one company said it would sell for £650 and offered me £130 for it! So high incidence of chancers in the business.
People do strange things...

The local newspaper is coming round to take a photo of me, where is my dressing gown.
Its P1 ROS
Sadly, I think your main market passed away relatively recently.
Sorry to be a pessimist, but I'd be seriously looking at adjusting your expectations if you think it's worth £5k
When I was selling my dad's plate "D6 ALF" there were some similar plates that were up for sale at £3k+ on some of the bigger selling sites. Great, I though so I put it up for £2.5k. Then after no interest £2k, then £1.5k. Still no takers. Eventually got an offer for £800 so snapped their hand off.
I think some of the prices on those sites are crazy and also will never sell at those prices IMO
Am I missing something here? There's hundreds of P1 plates on the DVLA webite, all for £499..
