Can anyone suggest the best method to hold them in place? I have roof bars (its a polo estate). Was thinking rope length and width ways should do it but if theres a done way of doing these things let me know!
Ta,
Ratchet straps. One at the back, one at the front.
Ah, good call. Will pop into halfords at lunchtime.
Have you tried putting them in the estate? Not being funny, just checking cause I got two doors into my corsa-b and managed to get the hatch closed.
(Infact the only thing that didnt fit in the little corsa that can recently was a bath, even then I just tied the hatch down for the trip - but my lights are on the car not the hatch so was still safe!).
David.
Hmmm I may try this first David as it would be preferable but cant imagine they will fit. I have vague memories of getting 1 in it years ago actually but having to drive shrunk down in the seat as the door went where my head should.. just thought on the roof might be a bit easier 🙂
don't buy your straps from Halfords though, it would be cheaper to rent a van for the day than do that. If its a one off and you don't have hundreds of other uses for the straps (or a local cheapo hardware shop ) then rope should be fine so long as you take a bit of time and care over it.
If the surfaces of the doors are precious put something soft between them esp between the bottom door and the roof bars and protect the edges were the rope goes over the corners to stop them cutting/rubbing in.Rope side to side as you would with the ratchets above, to tension them up run the rope across twice and tension them by putting a stick between the two ropes and twisting, tourniquet fashion, then letting the stick jam against the door to lock it.
If you're not happy you can get a lot of tension to stop the doors from slipping then the main thing to guard against is the doors slipping forward (braking forces are greater than acceleration) so put a loop of rope around the front edge of the doors too.
If you've got a screwfix nearby then they've got 2 for £8. Even at Halfords you'll get change from £20. Not worth scrimping on IMHO. You risk 3 points and a fine or even doing some nasty damage.
thanks skidartist, sounds like good advice. I have been borrowing the neighbours van a bit too much recently so need to manage this via the car. Quite happy to get the straps if they will do the job, the doors are free so I am savign a load anyway and they will be useful for trips back home to the isle of man.
Cheers,
nickjb, for sure would prefer to shed £20 than a £60 fine or like you say cause soemthing worse.

You haven't said what kind of doors they are though. Hollow internal doors? Solid? Firedoors...if so...two?? On a polo?? 😯
Seriously though, ratchet straps are yer only man, especially if they've got 2 for £8 at Screwfix. Just be sure to take plenty of cardboard to sit on the angle of the door as the strap goes round. As soon as you tighten up the ratchet, the straps dig in quite tightly.
And dry run with the ratchet before you pass it under the doors on the roof...so you know which direction up it needs to be. You want the straps to be flat all the way round. (You'll know what I mean when you're fixing them on).
Truckers hitch + diagonal tensioning ties if needed. This knot will secure big loads very well.
It's a polo estate darcy so its a little longer than a standard polo, 2 pine 4 panel doors. Will do 2 trips of I need to but surely shouldnt be that bad? Its not like I am transporting them hundreds of miles.
Easily achieved with a rope IMO/E...were none of you lot in the scouts?
2 pine 4 panel doors will be fine. Bear in mind the £8 a pair jobbies are only inch wide straps.
take some odd bits of wood and corrugated to stop the ratchet straps/roof rails damaging the doors

This thread has to be a troll right?
I carry doors quite often on the roof, doors to one side of roof edge of door just above the leg of the rack that conects to the roof, tie a length of sash cord here, available from screwfix, throw cord over doors and loop under rack bar, now take the cord diagonaly to the rear rack arm and repeat, now most importantantly, loop the cord over the front of the doors to stop them sliding forward, in a crash or even braking hard, 2 doors at 30mph will cause serious damage to anypone in the way, seen it happen once , not nice.
Never use the waxed cord or the blue rope made from nylon as they both slip even when you think youve tied them tight, check the load after a few miles, as they may well have sliped .
Finally wrap some pipe insulation on the bars to stop them scratching the doors, tie it on with tape or zip ties, foam also reduces wind noise on some cars from the rack.
