Right now thats out of the way with I understand the police have 14 days in which to issue a letter of intent to prosecute any motoring offences ,but realistically do speeding fines normally come through within that time as everything theses days is digital ? Ive seen light and bus lane fines come through within 3 days in the traffic office before now ,
Story short 4:30pm only me as far as the eye can see M74 near Moffet (as im now aware a true hot spot for mr eciloP , cruise set at 79 10%+2mph mobile unit on bridge ..
Just waiting now for the loss of £100 and addition of 3 lovelies to my crisp clean licence ..
Nearly all car speedos over read, so you may be ok. If it does you can set the cruise a bit higher next time 😉
My Honda was approximately 5% out according to GPS/sat nav.
Went past that exact bridge complete with van a couple of years ago with an indicated 99 on the clock when i saw it.
I did brake, maybe that was what they are looking for, as I never heard a thing about it.
Id guess you were southbound, as it's actually quite a hill, so increased possibility of a car making a little more progress without the driver noticing.
I never intentionally speed, but thats an easy place to get it wrong.
They have a time limit to get you informed of your crime.

Your own car or a company car? It'll go to the registered keeper first so there might be a delay if it's the latter.

As mentioned, depends on the car. You were probably doing around 75 and I'd be surprised if you got a ticket. Technically you can be nicked for 1mph over but the only time I've received a ticket I've been well over.
I do around 50k miles a year, try to stick to below the limits but I've often sailed past a van, looked at the speedo and worried.

I think you'll be fine. I am up and down that bit several times a week and went past doing more than that without any action. Think I've been done twice there, one at 88 and one at 92 over the years. Anything under 80 and I think the odds are in your favour.
Wifes car and normally i stick to 75 (yet another slapped wrist on here ) but the spot was at the bottom of the hill on my way back to Saddleworth after a day at Glentress so just wanted to get home ,i know the limit is 1 days my guessing though fines come through quicker theses days .. fingers crossed
Isnt there a 10% buffer zone. And assuming your speedo shows 4 or 5 mph slower than actual speed (ive tested both mine and they are well under at 70 mph) you should be fine.
From there down to Gretna, any flyover and then the Carlisle ones

Do BMW still make cruise an optional extra? It's on most cars these days. Makes the empty motorway much easier and removes that sped creep.

Nope, most modern spedo's are reading close these days so unless you know exactly what yours is showing (quality GPS, good satalite coverage or a handy police check camera) it's not worth banking on that. Enforcement is up to the local constabulary i think.

I may just add, I wasn't overtaking any traffic, in fact everything was going around the same speed as me.
Also, I reckon the police would 'almost definitely' do someone at that speed, so i can only assume one of two things,
A: they were drinking coffee, or
B: my speedo over reads.
Wouldn't want to put either of those scenarios to the test again

Sort of on topic anecdote. I was following a Skoda Citygo on my bike in traffic last week, and it had a HUD for the speedo. That was saying I was comfortably cruising uphill at 22mph, my Garmin had me at a much more realistic 16mph.
At 79mph on the clock I reckon you'll be ok.

Depends on the car and the age. Mine is surprisingly accurate, verified with phone gps and sat nav. Unless all three are out by exactly the same amount.

Indicated 79mph on the car, done at 79mph on the M6. I got a speed awareness course
I got done for 60 in a 50 at an indicated 59 mph ( 50 mph limit I missed) - mobile cameras do not have to use the leeway and your speedo might be accurate
The date in question was the 18th, so as every day passes im thanking my lucky stars hoping I would have heard something by now tbh
It really depends on the particular car, newer cars I'd imagine have more accurate speedos. That said my old Volvo was very accurate under 50mph,upto about 70 or 80 it over read by about 2 to 4mph.
I think they have 2 weeks to get a fine out to you.

I got caught in the same area last year at 74 mph. Speedo was reading around 80 but I lifted off when I saw the van. The Scottish police are dead keen on catching speeders and there is no speed awareness course option.

Speedos err on the side of safety though, they might over read, but they'll never under read. Generally the faster you go the more inaccurate they get.
As for the 10%+2 it is just a guideline, and nothing more probably more to save the authorities hassle than anything else with people arguing about calibration etc.
Technically you can get done for doing 1mph over, it's the drivers responsibility to obay the rules, if they can prove it.. But it's unlikely.

Yeh most police tend to have a common sense approach on motorways, someone driving sensibly at 80 on a clear stretch is much less of a concern than bad overtakes or people not checking mirrors when changing lanes when it's congested.

about 15 years ago I got done for doing 60mph on a 50mph stretch of the M8 at 2 o'clock in the morning on day after boxing day with hardly any traffic after the police had followed me "through town for 5 miles". No I hadn't done anything wrong, they had just followed me to observe. Breathalysed and totally clean. When I pointed out that while we had been stopped, every other car passing was doing over 70 mph, the answer was "we weren't watching them we were watching you." Smug git. His colleague had to point out to him that where they stopped me was actually a 60 mph stretch, but then he insisted on showing me his footage of me doing up to 60mph in the earlier 50 mph stretch before he pulled me over.
Guess he was a jobsworth or having a bad day if you were driving sensibly.
But at the end of the day, if you break the limit you can get fined.
Back in my youth I got pulled on the m1 in the early hours of the morning doing about 95.
He gave me a good bollocking and I was apologetic and didn't deny I knew how fast I was going, and he let me on my way.

Every car I've had in the last, oh, 15 years or so I've tested against a GPS. Every single one has over-read by around 10%. (Off the top of my head: Vectra, two Passats, Mondeo, Hyundai i40, probably others I've forgotten.) Currently in a 1-Series, haven't tested that one yet.
If you want to play the % game, then there's a way to get off this and I know it's correct as I have done it 😉
In Scotland they have a precedent that you only need to admit guilt under caution. When you get the NIP, fill in the details but DO NOT SIGN IT. This is where Scotland differs from England as not signing is a prosecutable offence in England, whereas in Scotland, signing it is an admission of guilt and you don't have to do that if you are not under caution.
They will send another NIP back to you saying that you haven't signed it, do the same again and every time they send it back to you. What they need to do is send the NIP to your local police station and ask for them to call on you and caution you and you then have to sign the NIP in front of them.
From the 1st receipt of NIP they have 6 months to call on you before it times out, most of the time the local bobbies are too busy to do this so ignore it 😉
Well no news is good news that's 11 days since the *alleged* speeding incident I know they have 14days but as everything is digital I thought I would have heard something by now
I know the 'safety' camera people have a different agenda, but I once got stopped and given a talking to by motorway cops and they told me to set cruise to 80mph and they won't bother with you.
