petrieboy V2.1 wants a scooter from Santa. whats good out there? what brands should i be looking at? it looks like a potential minefield of pseudo tech specs out there.
A bit of a minefield. When they are a year or two older (or possibly now) there will be 'cool' scooters and some that are not so cool.
Try to check out what the slightly older kids are riding.
Madd Gear was the vehicle of choice when my kids went through this.
Micro Scooters Maxi Micro - top quality and size will be ok for a six year old. Don't get the Mini Micro they will grow out of it too quickly.
My twins are 5 this week and want a new scooter for their birthday.
I showed them the Maxi Micro and the 2 wheeled Micro Sprite, the 2 wheeled one is what they want.
It's what all the big kids at school use, so the bigger version of what they've got was instantly discounted.
Also the 2 wheeler is £20 less, which is handy.
Micro scooter maxi, both my kids have one and my youngest has had his for two years an has done around 800 miles on it, we have changed the wheels and brake but it is still going great, there fast too ( if that's a good thing). There not for stunts and take a bit of getting used to as you steer them like a skateboard.
Got two maxi micro, and a micro rocket in the house. They are all pretty good - the two wheel job needs more maintenance as it shuggles itself to bits at times. Loctite
Got a ixia 3 and 2
Very very good.

Got my little boy this one for Christmas. Did a little research and it seems good, got all the right specs, i.e. threadless headset, IHC compression system and flex brake. And at a good price too.

jd bugs are well priced and bombproof, get him used to rolling then ditch it and buy him a skateboard.
Our 5 year old daughter has a Slamm Urban stunt scooter. Not cheap, but very solid and you can buy it in a kit with 2 different length bars so should last her quite a few years. It's scary fast though compared to her old cheapo 3 wheeler! The older kids next door seem impressed with it too, so should pass the cool test 🙂

Nem Jnr at similar age to the OP has one of these waiting for him for Xmas
Half price (£50) and seem to be well regarded. I know they're not the brand that the cool kids would go for but I reckon at this age that's not critical and if he really did get into it, it'd probably be a different cool brand by then anyway.
All good stuff guys thanks. I'd sort of discounted 3 wheel stuff as being for younger kids but given he's not used a scooter before am I being too quick to do so? I notice they do seem to be pictured with kids his size using them.
The older kids on our road are all 4 or 5 years older than him so I've not paid much attention to what they have.
5+ year olds will be fine on 2 wheelers. Many younger kids are too.
I'd go for stunt style scooter like the Madd and slamm ones mentioned above. Buuild like a tank and not overly heavy so perfect for kids that will be throwing them down. They be big enough for them to use them for years. I'd stay away from places like toys r us as they sell toys not sports equipment.
I bought two of these for my then 5 (just) and 7 year olds online and received a load of free stickers, magazines and bits as well.
£55 including free delivery

Lurking with interest. I have been tasked with buying my nephew a scooter for Christmas. He's 5 (6 in March) and says he would like a 2 wheel one - so something like the Micro Sprite looks about right?
"so something like the Micro Sprite looks about right"
I would rather go for a fixed handle bar one, unless he really wants one that folds??
just make sure the wheels are rubber and not plastic. the really cheap ones are horrible on anything but a skatepark and then are lethal on anything resembling a slope.
jd bug here (well the nipper has. its tough enough for 'daddys go' at teh skatepark)
she wants a skateboard though.
Got my daughter a mad dog last Christmas. Ebay bid and got it very cheap.
Very pleased with it, although I did have to rebuild it to actually put some grease into it. Very much like the headset on a bike so no hardship.
Couple of years ago got my son a MGP scooter. Much more expensive, much higher quality but, at the end of the day I think my daughters has been used more, thrown about more and it still does everything the more expensive MGP does.
I'd sort of discounted 3 wheel stuff as being for younger kids but given he's not used a scooter before am I being too quick to do so?
For a 6 year old 2 wheels for sure. Otherwise you will be buying another one in a couple of weeks.
I'm buying a scooter for my friends kid's xmas (He's 6yrs old but very tall) and after spending the past couple of hours checking reviews and recommendations i've decided to go for this Slamm Mischeif Eternal II for £69.95, seems a good price for the spec.
