[#4269674]

I've never seen it. We are discussing it at work and everyone is shocked.

Now I love great films, this seems to have passed me by.

Is it a classic? (This is a rhetorical question?)

Anything else? I'm off to HMV tonight to pick it up/watch.

It's a fantastic, and quite heart-wrenching film

all quiet on the western front. WWI from the German troop perspective. Very powerful. Two versions, both are good and the colour one has Ernest borgnine in it

+1 oldboy

Oldboy - tick.

If you want a proper anti-war film; Cross of Iron or Savior. Savior will never be popular. A horrid, nasty and depressing film.

On a war front, have you seen 'Flags of Our Fathers' and 'Letters from Iwo Jima'?

Seen both and didn't like them personally.

If you want to see a beautiful and sad film thats not all fighting:

I think this critic says it all:

Tender, melancholy, suspenseful and, finally, uplifting.

Taxi - the French version of the film. Mindless fun that should be watched.
Delicatessen - French again, also subtitled. The number of scenes in that film referenced since are incredible.
Restless Natives. It deserved to be bigger than Gregorys Girl.
Lawrence of Arabia. Should be watched if you haven't.

On the 2nd world war theme, Downfall is a great film.

I thought Schindler's list was an OK film. If it wasn't a true story it wouldn't be any where near as popular.

Have made a Paul Vanhoven Season for myself on Lovefilm, not seen any of his pre-hollywood films.

really rate his films, so hope his early films will be as interesting.

anyone recommend anything in particular.

Delicatessen
- this is weird for me. I utterly love Amelie. Magical, makes me grin and cry with happiness yet Delicatessen leaves me totally cold. Weird.

Schindler's List is a must watch imho

another vote for Restless Natives

The Warriors (1979)

AMELIE

Avalon

Maybe not a hidden/missed film but, American Weirwolf in London is worth adding to your list if you have not seen it yet Hora.

Anything by Alfred Hitchcock 😉

I've never watched The Godfather, Empire's greatest film of all time.

Also haven't seen Fight Club, Singin' in the Rain or GoodFellas from the top ten

The Lives of Others.

Rightly won loads of awards in 2006; sat in the pub for ages, just thinking, after watching it at the Cameo (Edinburgh). Nothing like the viewing that Schindler's had though.
Just don't read-up on it first, save the surprise (or lack thereof)

Mrshora badgered me non-stop to go and see Piano at the cinema when it first came out. I gave in (thinking arty-crap) and she was utterly bored whilst I sat there in love with the film. That was the start of my education 😀 Come to think of it, that was my film-ground zero.

The Talented Mr Ripley is one of those films I can watch whenever it's on TV. Beautifully made and really quite horrible by equal measures.

On the 2nd world war theme, Downfall is a great film.

I really MUST watch it sometime soon - bought it on DVD an age ago but never got round to watching it.

All Quiet on the Western Front - read the book thinking it was a real account. Was very disappointed when I found out it was a novel. 🙁

On Downfall, I didn't like it at the cinema but Traudl Junge makes her an easier character to like (and understand to a degree). The film is slightly depressing which succeeds interms of the acting (yes I know its a bit doom and gloom etc) but the acting/cinematography really works).

Not a fan of Wong Kar-Wai's other films but how about ChungKing Express?

I think I may have a [s]drink[/s] film problem. I just love films 8) and Indie/small cinemas.

Heres an awesome documentary/film: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/when_we_were_kings/

I'm not a boxing fan but the energy/story and James Brown is a brilliant mix. Really entertaining.

Anyone seen "My Life as a Dog". Really good film, Swedish I think.

"Subway" I thought was fantastic with some of the actors goin onto much bigger things. Recall it had loads press at the time, does that still happen for French films?

+1 for The Lives of Others
Also...
Brotherhood...historically very accurate and VERY powerful film about two brothers fighting in the Korean War, great soundtrack. I have watched this with my classes twice a year for the last 7 years and it still brings a lump to my throat. It's in Korean, but has subtitles.
