By which I mean a phone and maybe some keys. I have a back pocket on the shorts and tights I use, but my new phone is too big. I can still put my keys in it, but any suggestions for the phone?
I run in cycling jerseys. Seems to work well.
50p/card for a phonebox?
What are these phoneboxes of which you speak ?
Can't you get an armband holder type thing for the phone ?
Why would you carry a phone? The thing I like most about running is that you don't have to carry anything other than a house key in your pocket. I sometimes take a credit card if I'm going for a long run and don't back myself to make it home!
phone keys and wallet essentials go in my utility belt,
ipod is on a bicep strap
water, gels and water-proofs on my back
but any suggestions for the phone?
*fighting every urge to say don't take it with you*
Armband.

Batman?
I knew you'd question why I wanted my phone.
1) Strava/endomondo
2) In case I get hurt and need to call in the cavalry. Very few phone boxes around now, and I keep thinking of a bloke I know who slipped on ice and broke his leg and had to crawl through the snow for half an hour with a broken leg to the nearest house.
What's this utility belt?

+1
You've probably got something appropriate in your wardrobe already

Get a cheapo Garmin.
Watching with interest, often thought going out in the woods and fields with nothing more than a house key is a bit of a risk. Often thought of taking a whistle.
Spibelt
Armband
Occasionally run with Camelbak for really long runs
Get a cheapo Garmin.
How would a Garmin help me carry my phone?
That Spibelt is exactly what I was looking for.
The only other choice is something that lets me see the screen to check pace, but I don't think that's feasible.
Often thought of taking a whistle
For some impromptu shepherding?
How would a Garmin help me carry my phone?
It wouldn't. That's why I never suggested it could. I was merely pointing out for the Strava/Endomondo side of things, a wrist worn Garmin GPS could help when logging ones sprints/runs.
For scaring the bears - you know, the ones that shit in the woods.
I use a strappy velcro arm band thing.

Seems a bit harsh on the bears.

I know, but not the emergency phone call side of things.
+1 for the spi belt, GPS still works through it and in mine I have my garmin a gel and key.
I usually take bugger all, but if race kit rules or out a while OMM 3L bumbag.
I run in some cheap, light & breathable/quick drying MTB shorts that I got in Sports Direct. They have 3 zippy pockets so I can carry my keys, phone & inhaler.
Molgrips overthinking an issue? Well I never...
Get a runners bumbag, like fellrunners have been using for about 40 odd years. You can get big ones, small ones, medium sized ones and so on.

Try putting 'running bum bag' into your favourite search engine....
I use a Fell Runners Bum Bag too.. Trail running is my thang and I can carry 1ltr of water, my SG3 and car keys (which fit in a zipped pocket) the bottles secured by a simple elastic tie band and the webbing around the belt is large enough (about 1 1/2 wide) not to dig in nor become hassle.
Done over 100ks with it so far over all sorts of terrain with no issues other than thanking myself for buying it.
Cost (like that's an issue) £15.00 from Snow & Rock.
Bharrrrrghain... 😉
Panniers and a rack? Ooops sorry, wrong thread 🙂

D'you think? Saves doing it I suppose..... 🙂
Salomon do great bags, camelbag styles, but they are very expensive.
You can get tiny, stretchy ones:

It'll easily accommodate a <5" smartphone, some keys and a couple of other small bits. Couple of loops for gels or similar too.

It's only a phone he wants to carry, not spare clothing, refreshments and a picnic!
Road run - carry key
Fell run - inov8 bumbag with varying degree of kit in inc map compas phone.
look up Ron Hill trail shorts - have mini cargo pockets on the sides for gels / cards / phones. I put my Blackberry in there, but it wouldn't cope with one of these new fangled mini-tablet phones.
I asked what YOU use, not what should I use.
Thanks to everyone apart from crikey and boblo. Farts to you two.

Just got back from a run actually. Nice 6 minute mile pace*

I don't take a phone, and the idea of measuring a run fills me with horror
I know this is the wrong thing to say, but...Have you thought about just going for a run without measuring it? Just run for sake of the fact that you can run, and it's an amazingly freeing thing to do?
Road bikes are for hurting yourself and getting fit, running and MTB are just for shits an' giggles.
i don't run, but am amused by molgrips' admission that he wears tights.

The phone is mainly for emergency purposes. I used to take one before I had strava.
I know this is the wrong thing to say, but..
You live your life, I'll live mine, thanks all the same.
You don't need a phone for an 800m run! 🙂
Sorry I'm just sat here giggling to myself like a small boy. Just being a bit mischievous Moly, not serious... 🙂
Not all my runs are 800m! In fact none of them are, I didn't just go out for half a mile.. I did 800m intervals, and a loop out and back to a suitable bit of road.
have you informed the IOC about this? I don't think they got the memo.running and MTB are just for shits an' giggles.

I can't imagine anyone would think road biking and running weren't in the same category tbh.
I've always used a phone belt clip type pouch. Just got a Griffin Defender of eBay for £7.50 and that's seems to be working quite well. Other than that you could always choose alternative shorts? RaidLight have side pouches that could hold a phone and Salomon have huge pockets on the back that should help.
