Just back from Mexico where I discovered Cuban Matusalem Platino white rum 😀

This is a decent rum straight with ice and around £8 a bottle in Mexico... can you get it in the UK.. nah bollox !! some online retailers selling for £25.

https://www.drinksupermarket.com/matusalem-platino-white-cuban-rum-70cl?gclid=CJDYlaemsdMCFRc6GwodzQMM4Q

Currently drinking a Aldi Hopking dark rum which is pretty resonable as well.

What Rum you got 8)

My 30 mile cycle commute, over-demanding volunteering and lack of assistance with chores from my flatmate has been getting me down and tiring me out.

So I've taken tomorrow and Friday off and have made mescal margaritas.
Mescal, Aperol (Italian orange liqueur), lime juice, simple syrup and a salty rim

Not rum I know, but very tasty.

Just frying up some chilli con carne meatballs, baking cheese/jalapeno bread and boiling rice to eat with the new season of The Expanse which I rather enjoy.

Tomorrow I shall brew my own version of Dale's Pale Ale and then go buy a kitten to hug (serious)

Get OUT! 😉
Avoid the traditional 'navy' rums and mixers shouldn't be needed but use what you like ginger, coke etc <shudders>

I was lucky enough to enjoy a glass of Zacapa XO a few weeks ago and it was one of, if not the most, enjoyable drinking experiences I've had. Highly recommended.

The current lineup at home 😀

[img] [/img]

Dark Matter (Marmite, I'm not a fan)
Rumbullion (nicely spiced, good sipper)
Red Leg (bit on the sweet side, but decent)
Don Papa (amazing orangey smell, great sipper)
Smith & Cross (100 proof, actually not bad when mixed with coke)
Appleton Estate VX (first rum experience, bottle brought back from Jamaica 14yr ago!)
Wray & Nephew (overproof, slight banana-y taste, to be mixed)
Havana Club 3 anos (nice mixer, or neat actually!)

Mmmm rum.

Don't drink a huge amount of it, but might make the switch for the summer and pretend I'm Hunter S Thompson.

Any decent low priced rums I can dabble in? Partial to the Aldi Highland Earl over the winter, is their rum any good? Not going to spaff 20+ quid on a bottle anytime soon.

Yep. (Got it confused with Myers above earlier. As it's Myers in Cathay lounges)

It's not the best, but 14 years? 🙂

Let's say that I had a love/hate relationship with Jamaican rum for some years (free bar, student exuberance, early start, mountainous roads...).

Usually Kraken or Red Leg as my staple but recently had some of this.

+1 - fine selection.

Tend to resort to the tried/tested Mount Gay (in various forms) but partial to Appletons, and had a lovely Cuban rum a while back. Currently working through a bottle of aged Havana Club. Lived in Grenada for six months 12 years ago and became fond of Clarke Court dark - be interested to see how it holds up these days.

I'm a rum fanatic..

My fav currently is sailor jerry - delicious with coke!

For a sipper, I'm teasing captain Morgan black spiced at the mo.
However, on th back of this thread, I've just ordered a bottle of the diplomatic from amazon...will sup at the weekend!

We had some kraken recently - not horrible. Just I wasn't a fan.

Yes, for a budget dark rum head to Aldi and buy the "Old Hopking", it's around £10. Drink straight with 4 small ice cubes, pretty good for the price.

Rum should be neat... not "lovely with coke" 😯 unless I got the wrong coke.

Rum should be neat...

Depends what the rum is. And you're ignoring famous rum-based cocktails like mojitos and dacquiris!

But this is a rum thread, not a cocktail one.

Ron Zacapa 23 for me, prefer it to the XO
