Hi, just bought a 2014 Passat estate and looking to understand what the best roof racks. On my Focus I have Thule and are very happy with them.

The Passat has the rails already to mount the roof rack, what carrier feet would be the most ideal?

Cheers

www.roofbox.co.uk will tell you what you need (and are generally excellent). There will be a Thule footpack specific to your motor.

Funnily enough I am in exactly the same boat. Getting rid of a MkII Focus and replacing with 2014 Passat.

I am still working out what needs doing but I think I can just buy a new pair of fixing feet, attach to the old bars.

You need to work out if you have an old (2011-2014) Mk6 or a new (2014+) Mk7. The Mk6 has rails that have a gap underneath. The Mk7 has rails you can't pass your hand under.

As Cougar says roofbox.co.uk have an excellent website and should point you in the right direction.

I took advice from roofbox.co.uk about what to do with my Thule rack on my 55 (MKII) Focus to move it to my 14 (MK6) Passat.

Basically if your bars are 120cm (doesn't matter if they are the basic square bars, old aero bars, wingbars) then you just need the appropriate feet.

Ordered the new feet they arrived yesterday haven't got round to fitting them yet.

(Dorset_Knob are you in Dorset?!?!)

A bike can be slotted straight into a Passat estate on its side with the seats folded. Doesn't leave room for kids, dogs or cases though.

Went down the Thule route a month ago. My 11 Passat takes the 757 foot pack (raised roof rails).

Got mine from roofracks.co.uk whio were cheapest* overall after extensive research and a spreadsheet!

*Cheapest including matching locks all round, lots of places start cheaper but you will end up with 16 keys!

Anyway I'm well chuffed with the rack - had 4 fatbikes on it, and just got back from Holland & Belgium after a 1000 mile weekend chasing the Tour de France with 4 bikes, 4 blokes, all our kit and one mahoosive tent!
