I'm sure the victims would love the use of the word 'interesting'. 😐

A criminal who managed to evade justice for years, and only return to take advantage of the NHS?

Shame.

Blah. I'm sure some people will hold him up as some sort of folk hero as usual but whilst I don't wish death on anyone, he's far down the list of people I've never met to give a shit about.

I don't know to be honest but the word 'interesting' fails to recognise his evil character.

How appropriate! Great Train Robbery is on BBC1 tonight.
What a fitting tribute!

Clearly he thought he was Robin Hood - some kind of champion of the people.

Glad he's no longer sponging off a society he's never done anything for. Why we ever let him back in is beyond me.

Well, duh, he was a criminal in the sixties, when crime was cool. Apparently.

I've never understood the glorification of criminals by the general populous.

I came on here this morning just to see what the STW opinion on his demise would be.

I am relieved no-one is sticking up for him.

I think it's because people confuse him with Charlie Croker.

Will there be a two-day national mourning schedule followed by a state funeral on world-wide television?

And do you think they would be proud of what he did?

& a repugnant human being. Turned into a loveable rogue by the press who largely treated the crime as a victimless affair, despite the train driver never recovering. Ran like a chicken to escape justice and then squealed like a b**ch for free health care - then appealed to be released due to being 'about to die' - over 4 years ago.

hilter was someone's son too

I wonder if he gave the same consideration to the victims.

Death doesn't erase wrongdoing by the person. You're not washed clean when you shuffle off this mortal coil and the opinion on this thread is due to the deeds that made him infamous. As I said, I wish nobody dead but if you're going to be sympathetic I'm sure you can find more deserving of that.

Don't see why not. The previous one robbed us blind as well, and she got all the trimmings.

Glad to see he's not being glorified on here.

Does anyone know if it's standard practise for people to be released on compassionate grounds when they are terminally ill?

But, but we need to argue about something today. Posthumous knighthood for his services to robbery.

Robin Hood.He stole from the rich. Mr Biggs and co stole from a mail train that was carrying "the peoples" money... Not quite how I saw Robin Hood.
I shall resist the temptation to be judgemental......

It always sickened me how the British press and the cool crowd (possibly post Malcolm Mclaren and Sex Pistols) fawned over him.

He was a criminal who ran away from justice.

Let's face it, he did a lot less harm to society in general than Thatcher. 😉

I thought he'd died years ago and the current fascination was just the media's way of getting you to tune into their latest wares. Sounds like a bit of a tosser anyway.

Just to clarify - John Lydon was not involved.

"I think it's disgusting. That driver they coshed could have been my dad".

And let's not forget the ex-Lydon Pistols, Julien Temple and McLaren organising that great song with Biggs on lead vocal about how the holocaust was just the Nazi's idea of "having fun". Yeah. Cool.

^ I think this post sums things up nicely.

I imagine if your role model and hero is a man who was reponsible for another man's death, purely through greed, then there are some people that have some very skewed values

If he had done his time I think he'd be reviled less. His subsequent actions mean I'm not sorry at all, one less scumbag's medical bills to pay....

Don't rise to it, he was just saying it for effect. I am sure he didn't mean a word of it.
