Great guitarist with a sound that defined American rock at the time but did nothing for me.

Tongue cancer followed by throat cancer, bizarrely he blamed the tongue cancer on metal guitar picks rather than being a chain smoker.

Sad loss.

Never liked rock (love synth) but that guitar solo (assuming its EVH) made air guitarists of all of us.

Damn.

Eddie was one of the few guitarists who really did change the face of rock music and his playing seemed so effortless.

Sad news.

I know it's massively unfashionable now, and it was fairly unfashionable then, but rock music was a big part of my teens in the 80s and I listened to a lot of Van Halen and the like with my mates (including one of this thread's earlier contributors, cos I've known him since I was 13...).

I'll be having a nostalgia-wave-powered 80's rock listening day today I think, starting with a lot of Van Halen. RIP Eddie.

The guy was a genius to took rock guitar in a new direction. Copied by many, matched by very few.

RIP Eddie, you were the soundtrack to a chunk of my formative years.

Disappointed that he never got to tour with Wyld Stallyns.

There are few guitarist I like a little better but Eddie was for me the greatest guitarist of all time.

Not for the flash but for the songs and groove.

A true musical genius, song writer and showman

Just been playing a lot of stuff to get through deadline day and realised exactly what I what I was ripping off during the weekend with chords up the neck but open strings ringing out.
Humans Being and Respect The Wind from the Twister soundtrack.
Damn I loved the guy's playing.
Him, Satch and Vai did it all for me.
