Some reviews on Rottentomatoes (53%):

If you find yourself - perhaps under duress - watching Josรฉ Padilha's Robocop, rest easy in the knowledge that under no circumstances will you end up watching it again.

... a soulless metallic carcass designed by committee to amplify external gloss and maximise commercial profit.

I might have a film-night where we watch the original.

Off topic but I watched half of the 'A Team' movie last night.
Seriously, what a crock of absolute and utter drivel.

See that slipped into the "so bad it's good" category for me.

The sequence with them shooting down Reaper drones while parachuting a tank out of an exploding Hercules is stupidly brilliant. ๐Ÿ˜€

Total film rated it

And Empire hated it.

Just read Total Film's review and interview with the director. He sounds like he took it seriously at least.

Unless it has the guy saying "I'd buy that for a dollar!" in it, then I'm out.

The approach to this remake is very different. Where as the original is a very dark satire whereby a man faces an incredibly painful and disturbing conflict with his existence as a machine and all the losses that come with it the remake brushes over it completely, well it tackles it a little bit but more in a 'Woah, what happened to my super fit Hollywood bod?! Whoah, i'm like totally bullet proof now dude, this is frickin' cool!' sort of way.

It's a completely different animal, which is fine, I wouldn't want a pointless carbon copy. It's just a pity that on its own, it's a really bad film.

How is the first one satire? You'll have to help me I haven't seen it since I was about 18.

In the same way that Starship Troopers is a satire.

By being satirical.

Serious - comments a lot on - privatisation, globalisation, commercialism (specifically the viewing of people as mere assets by big business), the soulless, vacuous (sp?) nature of modern life, etc.

I have. Started off quite well but went seriously downhill IMO. At least they tried to do it a bit differently I suppose.

It wasn't, people have tried to lay stories and meaning over the top of the shoot em up cliched 80's action plot. It was just bog standard big budget 80's entertainment, nothing more.

Oh dear MSP, really? The satire in Robocop (and Starship Troopers) is pretty bloody obvious.

Personally I think it is satire...

It isn't satire there is some heavy handed morality message thrown in badly, just like the "what did we learn" bit at the end of 80's cartoons.

I watched it the other night, really liked it. Thought they'd done a good job revamping it.

The first one was just a poor Judge Dredd rip-off IMHO. Can't really see what the fuss is/was about. Ok film, easy remake.

I think its satire too... check out the "in film commercials":

Replacement "sports hearts"
Family nuclear warfare game
Advert for American car "because bigger is better! *estimate 8.2mpg"

Just like Total Recall and Starship Troopers, Robocop is thoroughly satirical and has political points to make. Verhoevens best works. And then came Showgirls....

Oh, I thought Robocop was all right. Nowt special, just a brain off dose of guns and robot adequate fun.

Neither impressed nor disappointed.

Lie to me and tell me you didn't enjoy that?

I've successfully blocked that part of my memory. So have no idea of whether I enjoyed it or not.

Terrible movie.

Could have been great.

Good sfx and battles.

Poor script, wrong actors and just crap.

I've not seen a remake of a film that has been any good. I watched Robocop on the plane yesterday. I still haven't seen a decent remake. If there were no other half decent films on the IFE to watch instead I would have turned off halfway through.

Heat was a good remake - way better than original. Departed is good but not as good as original movies.

The Coen Brothers' True Grit was better than the original in my opinion. I never really understood why anyone thought that John Wayne was a good actor.

Which King Kong remake? I liked the '80's one with Jeff Bridges, but wasn't keen on the Peter Jackson one.

Completely different movies. I think acting was different back then. Actors tended to be more dramatic and over acting was the norm. Modern actors try to deliver dialog in a more realistic fashion. Wayne was a great actor for his time.

Anyway, Robocop was shit. The new one I mean. I was disappointed on all counts. Rubbish story line. Poorly developed characters, mindless plot. Standard CGI.

Casino royale with Daniel Craig was better than the original I reckon.

I've not seen a remake of a film that has been any good. I watched Robocop on the plane yesterday.

John Carpenters The Thing was a remake. Also happens to be one of the best films ever made.

The Fly (Cronenberg) also a remake. Again, truly excellent.
