I have a stack of old rave, d&b and techno tape packs that I want to rip before shoving the lot in to storage. Whats free and or the best way of going about it.?
I have a tape deck with a line out and a shite load of space on a hard drive, I just need some software.

Cheers.

Audacity will record from line in (and much more);
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Although, if you're on a windows PC there usually an application called Sound Recorder in the Accessories section of the Programs menu. Having said that though, it's very basic, you'd get more options with Audacity.

Another (redundant) vote for Audacity.
