Not sure how big he was over here, either solo or with the Heartbreakers, but to my mind left a pretty big legacy of his own work, as well as being part of the Travelling Wilbury's.

Another one of music's greats gone.

Bloody hell, seriously ?

What a God Damn shame, he was part of my growing up.. loved his laid back nature and songwriting.

Rest well... Tom.

The sunlight on the garden
Hardens and grows cold,
We cannot cage the minute
Within its nets of gold,
When all is told
We cannot beg for pardon.

Our freedom as free lances
Advances towards its end;
The earth compels, upon it
Sonnets and birds descend;
And soon, my friend,
We shall have no time for dances.

The sky was good for flying
Defying the church bells
And every evil iron
Siren and what it tells:
The earth compels,
We are dying, Egypt, dying

And not expecting pardon,
Hardened in heart anew,
But glad to have sat under
Thunder and rain with you,
And grateful too
For sunlight on the garden.

Not a huge fan ..but loved the album "Your Gonna Get It" ..and have his G.Hits album ..
Also liked his tracks with Stevie Nicks especially " Stop Draggin My Heart Around "...
The one track that has me hitting the replay button is "Mary Jane's Last Dance"
Extremely talented musician..

He never made it big over here, but do recall Learning To Fly being played a lot of MTV around 1990. He apparently did a few tunes with Stevie Nicks in the early 1980s.

RIP.

Saw him at IoW festival in 2012.

Wasn't much of a fan before that, but became one after seeing him live. Great performer.

My first 2 music memories,

Listening to help! L.p. on my dad's lap.

Looking for TP and the heartbreakers on the chart show every Sat because I could shout on my dad that his fave musician was on tv.

I've since inherited all my dad's LP back catalogue, including all TP.

I'll have to wait to spin them until tomorrow as the little ones in bed.

Sad news.

Bad times. Kinda lost track of where he was at after Southern Accents, but American Girl intro still raises hairs on the back of my neck 40 years on. 😥

I'm actually devastated. He was one of my favourites, and has been for 30+ years.

May his memory be eternal.

Not a great favourite of mine, but I did love Free Falling, Learning To Fly and others..

Blimey, what a crap year: Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Chuck Berry and now Tom Petty.

Full Moon Fever was the soundtrack to one of the greatest summers, I ever had. Never really listened to his other stuff, but that one album has a special place in my mind.

So much so, that i have never felt the need to comment on a RIP thread before tonight.

Cheers Mr Petty, RIP.

Odd that the BBC are only reporting critically ill right now. Either way it's a real shame, I loved Full Moon Fever, one of the first albums I bought.

RIP Tom

The End of the line. Brilliant song by the wilburys, and a nostalgic video with Mr Orbison's guitar rocking on the chair...

Tom Petty is one of those that really made my taste in music. The jangly 12 string, Rickenbackery sound and a sense of melody that was undeniable. I discovered he really existed with the Wilburys, and he's just always been around since. Thanks Tom.

The only website that has confirmed his death is rolling stone magazine no media outlets have reported him as being dead. Hold your horses.

Seems like the news media like to be first rather than correct nowadays. Fair play to the bbc for holding off. Hope he makes it

Sad that someone should get reported dead, when they're not. Media frenzy to be 'first' spills over onto STW. 🙁
