Oh man.....RIP fella.

While I thought what he did was amazing, it did surprise me the way it caught the nation quite so much.
It sounds a bit cold, but I wasn't actually that fussed on following his exploits at the time although I saw a couple of his interviews & he seemed like a thoroughly, decent down-to-earth man.

But, seeing that thread title has knocked me for six. How absolutely crap....?! Terrible news. I am literally on the edge of tears.

Well, he lived a full & worthy life. I am sure he has inspired many people & I wish his family all the best during this tough time. Gutted.

If I see Boris on TV later talking about best of British then I think I might lose it.

Gutted. What a way to round off a life well lived though.

100 years is a ripe old age. And sounds like his last year was right up there as one of his best.

Oh .. and its Colonel Tom to me and you..

Bit of this

Lot of this

If I see Boris on TV later talking about best of British then I think I might lose it.

Was genuinely a bit upset to hear he'd caught it, more so to hear this.

My reaction was 'nooooooooooooo'.
Sad to hear yesterday he'd gone into hospital but gutted when I just found this out.
Just about the only good news story over the last year or so.
A true hero and inspiration and feels like a little light has gone out 🙁

Rest easy Captain Sir Tom.

Gutted when I saw this on the news, partly because he is a local as well as national hero. As much as I hate to say it i am a little peeved at Reading all the digs at Boris on social media for his statement. Yes he is a lumbering knob gorilla and the pandemic has been grossly mismanaged but let him say his piece about some sad news

I think the problem here is that when one is a proven habitual liar and lack a shred of integrity, people tend to assume that one is cynically seeking an opportunity to be associated with a decent human being.

And they'd be right.

What a last year this hero had. If you were to plot out your life, anyone would take bowing out at the top of their game at 100...having inspired so many.

Stand down Cap'n.

*properly doffs cap

For someone who rarely gets emotional about the loss of a well know figure this has properly gutted me. Totally illogical as he had a good life and a spectacular last year. I think it's the irony of the poor chap dieing with covid in sight of the jab. Manufactured hero or projected into the national consciousness when we needed a hero does not matter. He seemed a truly good man, doing s good thing and lifting national spirits.

He'll be remembered for years to come.

As for Boris - Damned either way. It was appropriate for our PM to say something and for better or worse (who am I kidding, worse obvs):he is the only PM we have right now.

Am I a cold-hearted bastard by thinking he was cynically manipulated for political reasons? Downing St flies the flag at half mast for him but not the 100,000 other deaths before him.

Poor guy dying of Covid, well done for walking around your garden, but I just feel the whole thing was a distraction.

I’m with you, but for me none of that diminishes from what Sir Tom did. I don’t really feel that emotional about him personally if I’m honest, good innings and all that, but this outcome sort of sums up this whole horrible sh*tty year. RIP.

There's people I've seen spouting the "covid mostly kills the old and people with pre-existing conditions, why should teh whole world stop for them, they would have died soon anyway" now saying "RIP Captain Tom" and I want to go around and burst all their mouths tbh.

But that's on them not the captain so, RIP Captain Tom, obviously one of the good guys in a world with too many of the bad.

@northwind - I thought exactly the same.

What a guy though. A fulfilled life and served his country ending in A selfless statement that galvanised a nation for no personal gain and raised a hell of a lot of money doing so.

RIP

@AlasdairMc   I'm sure he was a smashing bloke but the whole thing reminded me of the film Wag the dog. Part of me kind of assumed he was CGI and needed a fitting end.

100% this..

Short of spending my last days surrounded by a mountain of coke and hookers, going out, aged 100 as a national hero, would be a pretty fine way to go.

If I were to let you know that a centanarian in my village had died today I doubt that would I see a similar reaction. Captain Tom somehow united us and perhaps that feeling is what people are remembering? missing? mourning?

Similar to a lot of the above comments. I'm pretty cold hearted / down to earth when it comes to death.

Looking at it in the cold light of day making it to 100 and being such an inspiration in your final year is amazing.

But when my wife told me Captain Tom had died I felt completely gutted. Maybe it's the straw that broke this camel's back 😢

Not unpopular here. Bread and circuses is all our tousled-hair fool is able to do. See also asking opposition leader to confirm schools are safe whilst dodging why the borders are not secure and compulsory quarantine required for all arrivals.

It's sad that Capt Moore has died but so have many other older relatives and they were equally valued by their families and me.

Hey Boris how about we clap once for every victim so far?

If you clapped once a second it would take nearly 28hrs to clap once for 100000 people.

You need to get quicker at clapping. One second between claps is a very slow clap and could be taken the wrong way.

Does anyone know anyone who is aware of anyone who might be partaking of Boris' clap?

There's probably a whole flotilla of braying posh girls that have participated in Boris's clap.

I'm not going to. It is a distraction from the 100k+ dead.

Sir Tom did a wonderful thing but this feels like a propaganda stunt.

Yes Tom was a good man but I find it very insulting that his family got to be beside him on his death bed. My gran died last year at the good old age of 96 yet none of my family were aloud to be with her in her final hours. But then again she just cracked nazi codes and didn't raise £33m for an underfunded NHS.
