[#1491933]

I've just bought a 3 bed semi and want to change the old fuse panel (with only a few fuses protecting the house) to a new split board circuit breaker type. I know i'm not allowed to do this under the new (2005) regulations so no worries there.

What I want is for the fuse panel (consumer unit) to be replaced and an inspection on the existing system to be undertaken to make sure that it is safe.

I got a sparky in last night to quote and he said that because i don't have an earthed lighting circuit he'd have to rewire all that as well because he can't do the fuse panel and leave the lighting circuit as it is (because of his own certification and stuff). Does this sound about right or is he having me on? I've got another guy coming tonight to quote so i'll see what he says as well.

Can anyone clear this up because although I can see his logic, i figure unearthed lighting systems have been around for years and as long as it is tested for impedence etc and not connected to metal fittings then surely all is fine? Or is a rewire of the lighting system before I start decorating a good investment in safety and house selling?

I am confused.com.

No, doesn't need a re-wire. It would just need all the switches and lights to be changed to plastic 'double insulated' where are you based?

Ok, well I'm a self employed electrician myself... I'd be interested in doing the work, if that interests you email me at amb-electrical@hotmail.co. uk with a phone number and we could maybe discuss it?

I've just dropped you an email with my number in it. Happy to have a chat about the work.

Cheers,

Lyons is technically correct, but how many "nice" plastic light fittings have you seen?

In my opinion if it's not got earthing on the lighting circuit the instalation is from the '60s, i'd have it rewired anyway and have sockets and lights where you want them.

Anyway from the horses mouth

You just moved in? Sorted. Just snip off the tamper guard on the main feed, turn off the power and replace the consumer unit. Call the Leccy Board to explain you've just moved in and found no tamper guard on the feed, they'll be out to fit another and bobs your mums brother. ๐Ÿ˜€
