roofbox.co.uk says my kodiaq needs a 127, rather than 118cm. for 4.5 cm each end, do i really need it?
Yes, unless you are able/can be arsed to fit it in the narrower section of the rails each time. You’ll also need a new foot pack if you are planning to re use an existing. Ask me how I know all this…🙄
You might, you won’t know until you try. It’s easier to go the other way, longer bars to shorter. A few years ago when I changed cars (Passat to sportage IIRC) I thought the same as you, until I tried to fit them and they were too short and I just couldn’t get the footings to fit in the bars at one end, about a cm too short. There is usually an overhang allowed in the measurements, whether or not it’s enough for you, who knows.
My fabia has been wearing the 'too narrow' roofbars fur 5 years. With canoes or bikes on for many thousands of miles. It left about 1.5cm each side.
YMMV
Look second hand - I've just picked up a pair of Yakima bars for £50 in mint condition from Gumtree, plus a (returned /box open) footpack from roofbox.co.uk for £35.
Nice one - thanks folks. Looks like a fitting kit and bars needed then
