How much money have they offered you compared to your salary or your redundancy entitlement?

I would go back with a counter offer - "fine in principle but I want more money" At least double their offer. If you have a few years service I would be asking for a years salary and settle for 6 months.

I was in very much this sort of position a while back. I walked with £7000 when my redundancy was only £400. In that case tho the HR where so incompetent that they had left themselves open to big claims and me and t'missus ran rings round them.

Settlement agreements they are called now!

Yes as TJ says, sounds like they have clumsily offered you a compromise agreement to leave. They do have to advise you get legal advice for any agreement, £500 sounds pretty normal to cover this. This is purely for you to get someone to read the agreement through.

Again as TJ says work out what you're due through redundancy, ask for more but do it politely, sounds like you are in a genuine redundancy situation so they could just withdraw any offer to be spiteful and give you statutory and make you work your notice. Flip side is if they don't offer a reasonable amount more than statutory you might as well push for a standard redundancy, more paperwork for them and better on your CV and no gagging clause.

Dont forget redundancy is capped so 6 months may be massively more than you are entitled to through statutory if you're on a good salary. The other thing to bear in mind is you might be able to get your notice tax free if they do it right but I have a feeling HMRC may have closed that loophole.

From now on its a negotiation. Remember that. The job is gone its all about how much money you walk with. costs to them of making you redundant and / or fighting and unfair dismissal claim can be high - they save this money by the settlement agreement so remember that in your negotiations.
