Digital download had me on at midnight.
dammit - lesson learnt re: digital download, how is it? praise be? am stalking the postie waiting to start my new life (sorry wife and kids, it's been fun)...
edit: how is it? - a stupid question, you've gone to the other side...
I’ve just woken to pictures on social media of one of my riding buddies, dressed in full cowboy gear, queuing outside Game at midnight last night. His joy was some what subdued when, at 1am, he put the disk in to find he had 4 hours worth of updates to DL...
tbh I thought technology had stopped all this silliness, evidently not...
I downloaded it on Wednesday on Xbox, there were no updates required when I put it on this morning, it went straight into the game. No time to play it, was just checking it would be ready for this evening.
disc just arrived (about to gloat but) 1) ps4 needed an update (5 mins) but as above 2) it says it has 3 hours to copy (not download) the data disc over - wah!!!

Technology is what allows this.

Very pretty still working my through the introduction missions.
My only surprise is how many people are surprised that it takes time to shift 100GB of data from a couple of discs to a HDD and install it into a working game.
my disc has just arrived at the office
my one is now sitting on the door mat at home apparently.
It's heee-ere!
100GB install….and 85GB release day patch…
3.6GB patch on the eggsbox.
Yeah that 85Gb patch seems a bit odd as it was only 93Gb for the digital.

I’ve just put the disc in my Xbox. It’s a 84.24GB disc install (I wonder if I’ll have to swap discs for all of it) and a 3.63GB network patch. I was getting a 90Mbps download so it’s servers are up to it at least.
Doesnt sound bad for rural internet players.
In fact, unless it decides to drop a surprise in my lap later on, I don’t think 4Mbps is going to be any sort of hinderence because I think you’d still download the network part quicker than you’ll get the data from the disc installed.
(I wonder if I’ll have to swap discs for all of it)
It asks for disc 2 at a smidge past 50% (which is unsurprising, a dual-layer Blu-ray disc holds 50GB). Currently at 80% installed and it's been going an hour, unless it's Microsoft Progress Bar™, talk of a three hour install is excessive (unless the PS4 is a lot slower to install than the Xbox).
... finished (and back to disc 1). Total install time, about an hour and a quarter. 105.8GB.
So do I bite the bullet and buy it then? Still undecided...
Let me know when you’ve all sunk a few hours as out of the country for a few days so in no rush to order it.
2 lots of 40 mins ish after all on the ps4 so about the same 😉
game on...
The human cost of creating and releasing RDR2 to schedule.
Be interesting to see how this plays out, not that I suspect we'll hear much more than RS would like us to hear.
Never mind that I've just been mauled by a bear.
My brand new PS4 and copy of the game is at the Post Office waiting for me to collect. Shame I'm 100 miles away and not due home until tomorrow. Aaaaaargh.
Don’t know if this is a troll review on Amazon but it made me chortle - especially if they are being serious
Why is it so hard to stop killing animals and the disgusting so called sport of "hunting", in video games? You wouldnt hunt a human, a women or a child in a video game so why animals?
A DISGUSTING GAME BY ANYONES STANDARDS.
ROCKSTAR GIVE ME A GAME THAT I CAN HUNT DOWN HUMANS IN THE WOODS FOR FOOD AND LET THE ANIMALS HAVE REVENGE, SICK TO THE BACK TEETH OF SO CALLED HUMANITY IN THIS DAY AND AGE.
THE WAY THESE SO CALLED MACHO MEN THINK THERE HARD BECAUSE THEY EAT MEAT AND HUNT ANIMALS IS HILARIOUS,
SENT GAME BACK FOR A REFUND AND GOOD RIDDNACE.
Beautiful looking game, been playing a few hours now and it still feels like I’m in the pre-game ‘learning bit’ not very open world at the moment.
Still a stunning looking game, finding the controls very clunky.
Graphically it's amazing ( on Xbox one X anyway), controls do feel clunky at the moment, maybe it'll get better. It does feel a bit slow paced with a fair bit of trotting along with not much going on so far,but hopefully it'll get better.
Been kicked off the TV for the evening,so will probably give it another go tomorrow
Wife is about done with tv so I will get a couple of hours into it hopefully before I’m too knackered. Heard there’s 5 or so hours of tutorial type stuff before it properly opens up.
Had thought I’d lucked out as wfh today but hadn’t factored in half term and the kids wanting to play their silly games Don’t they realise Dad needs to get his westworld fantasies played out??
It's great they have made the same button aim your weapon and engage with strangers. Keep your weapon holstered!
Looking great on just an ordinary Xbox, must be amazing on the higher spec one.
Played a couple of hours tonight, graphically it's amazing but it hasn't gripped me yet. Looks like a train robbery is imminent, I'll give it another few hours tomorrow

Once you're through the main introduction missions there's loads going on much like the first characters lead their lives around you waving you down or shouting for help. Then there's the added details you need to pay attention eating, clothing, washing and looking after your horse.
What is everyone playing it on? Do I need an xbox X or will an S do?

PS4 Pro 😉
S will do.
PS4 Pro for me.

I was about to post this, one of my Twitter feeds has been full of stuff about the crunch for this game. I appreciate many don't care but it's not good at all.

It is a bit rubbish but many of products come with such back stories, the employer is ultimately is responsible.

Your choice to reward the employer for his behaviour. #youtoo
What's everyone's verdict then?
I'm now out of the intro section and into chapter 2, I can't see it holding my attention for much longer, too slow paced, controls are clumsy.
Graphically and technically its an 11 out of 10,but I'm not sure about the gameplay, perhaps it will get better.

So tell me what other items do you boycott?
I'm enjoying it Julian it's not fast paced but it's not meant to be it's pretty much a RPG not just a shoot em up. There's loads to do in the background.
I'm getting use to the controls already.
I'm still on PS3, so idly looking at PS4+RDR2 bundles.
Do I need to spend the extra ton for the Pro? I'm only going to be playing RDR2 , and I'll get a 2nd hand copy of GTAV, and that's it.
Or I'll just wait for it to get ported to Switch 😉

Nah. Buy a second hand PS4 and you're good.
it’s pretty much a RPG not just a shoot em up.
Yeah that sums it up pretty well, I have never really liked rpg's
As Jamie says you'll be good with a PS4 although my nephew tells me that he seen some frame rate issues into the big city but not to the point of it being unplayable.
Could be why then Julian.

i wish the main character walked a bit faster
He can run or use your horse.

Ive only just managed to get to chapter 2. Chapter 1 was okay, but felt very restrictive and linear, you’re not really in control, you press X when they say press X and he does stuff, few if any of the other controls work... but it’s just a long training mission coupled with the back story.
Once we made camp and I was free to roam it was like a polished RDR1 which was nice, I hunted for a bit, got into a rumble with a couple of O’Driscals and had a shave.
Its really too early to say, but I’m here and Miss Jay is watching Katie Morag so I might as well chip in.
Things I like:
Graphics.
The environment, it’s basically teeming with life.
Horse riding.
shooting.
Things that will probably end up annoying me.
Seems you can only carry a small amount of stuff, which is a lot more realistic than most games, it’s not really possible for 1 man to carry 9 pistols, 4 shotguns, 12 rifles, 12 petrol bombs, a collection of knives, 50 assorted animal pelts, 500 rounds of ammo, etc etc etc, but I get the feeling that you’re pretty buggered without a horse in this and I’m told once they die, they’re dead so you’ll no doubt spend a long time walking trying to replace it.
How slow he moves on foot, yeah you can run (not in camp which is annoying) but it doesn’t last long, see above, no horse, buggered.
Its very high maintenance, already in one mission I’ve disccoved:
You need to wear weather correct clothing.
You need to wash your horse.
You need to shave.
You need to eat, but just to fix bullet holes, but not to starve.
You need to support the camp and in a few ways.
And it doesn’t seem that these are little details you can do if you wish like in GTA games, you actually need to do them or bad things happen.
Im looking forward to playing again later when Miss Jay goes to bed, but I’m interested to see how much you can do your own thing in between mission of weather you’re tied close to the camp, Ive read you cross the map with your camp as the story progresses, I’m not sure how free you are until it’s done.

Please tell me that's wrong and I don't have to do all that rubbish.....

It's a RPG how you look affects how people react to you.

I've 3 horses already, I've unlocked some stagecoach points and you can always climb on the train. It'll be an inconvenience but not a hassle.
