Is this allowed? Just been down to throw a matress, and in the plastics skip was a nice little Kayak. It would have to be hooked out with a hook on a pole, but looked in good nick.

I believe it's considered theft to put your own rubbish in somebody else's skip, so contrariwise, taking stuff out must be a gift. The Adult College in Lancaster often has a skip which they fill with interesting rubbish. I went in and asked if I could take stuff, and a nice lady told me they could not give permission, as that would make them liable for any damage I caused myself, but she said once things were in the skip they didn't care what happened to them 🙂

found to date: filing cabinets (including vodka), guillotine, colour enlarger, circular saw table, office chairs various, printers etc, etc. Currently on offer: 3 (wet) karaoke machines (best place for them IMO)

I don't think so, but if you can make use of it, who cares 😉

Amazed as to what people get rid of, replaced both my fireplaces with decent ones from skips (yes, I did ask the owner before taking them).

Would love to be able to recycle some of the stuff you see being thrown away at our local tip.

You've changed, asking if it's allowed?! Get on with it.

MY mate is a skip / waste scrounger par excellence.

He once cleared a secondary school in Sheffield of 16no. interactive whiteboards - as one was in the skip, and they were gonna dump all of them.
He has got a 16' trampoline, many filing cabinets, most of the furniture in his house, 5 bikes.....

The stuff people throw out is amazing - we have a garden of plastic childrens toys (ride on tractors etc) all of which have been skip finds...

If it's anything like the Devon recycling centres, there'll be some knuckle dragging thug lurking around in council overalls telling you that "you can't have that mate" and generally yelling abuse at his Polish workmates.

David - if it isnt allowed there may be a late night assualt on the centre 😉

There was a guy sitting in the shed, and as i say id need a hook or something to extract it. So need to be prepped. Mind you, even if its not allowed, im sure a 4 pack of beer would sort that particular H&S issue out..

Good, good. I've done this before and just slipped them some cash in hand.

legally you can take from skips and bins as once someone bins something they give up ownership of it.
On council land they are not giving up ownership but handing it over to the council hence bribery is the only route.

At the Devon centres there're always a group of 'employees' who go through EVERYTHING that you turn up to dump. If they think it's got any value they pull it into their own little shed / cabin / lair and will sell it on as soon as you leave. The Council deny this practice but I caught them doing it last time I moved house - I tossed out a TV the previous owner had left behind and when I went back with the 2nd load the TV was on sale for £15.

Then they had the cheek to ask me if I had the remote.

I'd say grab it, if they give you grief give them beer.

At my local one (Wyre borough council) they said as long as you can extract it without jumping in, you can have it 😀 I wanted wood for some boardwalk down my garden.
They still hoard the valuable stuff for themselves though, and was once told to bugger off when I asked where they kept the bikes. He reckoned they had a 'contract' with a guy on the local market!
