A 2005 Gevrey Chambertin 😀
...for tonight. I want to get drunk
Stoner is gonna love this thread.
hmm perhaps I should have added 'reasonably cheap' to the original post!2005 Gevrey Chambertin
You can pick up a good (for the price) Cote du Rhone on Aldi for £3.50. Drinkable and that is from a wine snob!
You have 2 options...
1) The classy option...Do they have a Waitrose in Swindon?
2) The 'value' option... Go to ASDA and buy a wine box, preferably Rioja.
Morrisons are / were doing 'La Vieille Ferme' for 5.99 reduced from 6.99. Its rather nice and is on Oz Clarke's shortlist of the best 250 wine buys. Red BTW
Price range = I'd consider up to £12. Given that its a school night.
Must go with my intended dinner of steak n blue cheese salad 🙂

ha ha ha you have to be kidding...

Bleeeurgh! You've just made my face do a lemonsucking impression. Cheap rioja, ugggh!
For cheap wine I tend to go New World Cabernet Sauvignon.
If you have an Oddbins nearby, Matetic Corralillo Merlot/Malbec
About £17 a bottle but the best wine I've drunk (lots of) in the last year.
IdleJohn... I have absolutely no idea what cheap wine from Asda might taste like 8)
lexiekay on your budget get a decent Rioja!
I bought a bottle of Little Penguin from Sainsburys the other day. £5.49 and pretty nice tbh!

Not surprisingly Asda pasties are better than the wine!
Hmm according to the helpful 'wine personality test' provided by the Little Penguin people (link above) I should be looking for a Pinot Grigio instead...
You are the penguin with the sunniest disposition. Breezing through life without a care in the world, you always have a smile on your beak. Crisp and refreshing, you are like summer in a bottle. Sitting back on the beach, watching the waves roll in, you see your glass of Little Penguin Pinot Grigio as half full- and you'll fill it right up.
Not sure thats all entirely true 😆
Pinot Noir?
BTW... damn you. Now I want to drink red wine.... not drinking this week is going appalingly.
I've just made a note to avoid 'Little Penguin', partky because of the stupid name, but mainly because of the ridiculous, stupid, personality test!
What wine are you, good grief. How old are you, 12?, more like.
When someone asks for a beer recommendation do people offer up hop names like Challenger, Progress and Pioneer?
Or do they offer up regions like Kentish, Yorkshire or Herefordshire?
❓
Stomer, I'd offer any Tomos Watkins 😀
I stumbled across this a couple of weeks ago, and like it.
Nice wine for the price and it works. 😉
The 2005 is a bit more expensive and better.
chasse du pape
Thanks for the suggestions - I'm off to the supermarket!
Blue Nun.
Owt Penfolds..
Eldorado fortified wine is what you need if you want to get drunk.

Not sure I'm very comfortable with Glitter, Gary, member and a Blue Nun in such close proximity. 😕
Guigal Côtes du Rhône 2006 or Bouchard Aine et Fils Red Burgundy 2007 or a nice Paul Mas Grenache-Syra.
Well that was harder than I thought it'd be.
Found what looked like a nice bottle, only to get ID'd at the checkout. Honestly. I'm 30. (and no I didn't have any ID on me 😳 )
So on to shop number 2 - much less choice, but ended up with: a bottle of 2006 Campo Viejo Rioja. Better be nice after all that effort!
Good choice actually.
2006 was a good year (MB muy bien) for Rioja.

Salud!
campo viejo is one of my "bankers". Consistently drinkable, consistent flavour, and reliably, progressively better as you go up through the DOC classification. Their crianza is best value for money IMO. Reserva is my favourite.
I usually go for <£4 and >=13.5%
but then I have no palette
<£4 and >=13.5%
that nearly rules out petrol 🙂

That was on offer at Sainsburys a couple of weeks ago, nearly half price I think. I took it round to a friends when they invited me round for tea and it met with universal approval. 🙂
That's reminded me actually, I've got the 2003 vintage of that wine as well. Something to look forward to this weekend.
We usually go for whatever's on 3 bottles for a tenner in Asda. Or, something that's usually £8 or so but is reduced to a fiver.
I tell myself that can't really taste much difference between wines. But, I can between whiskies and beers.
I think this is probably because I buy half-decent beer and whisky, but crap wine. But, I can't afford to get a nice-wine habit 🙁
Their crianza is best value for money IMO. Reserva is my favourite.
Is there really much difference between the Crianza and Reserva on such an inexpensive wine?
And bang for buck I'd actually recommend the Antaño over the Campo Viejo.
the extra year ageing does come through. I think CV are one of the producers who make some of that extra time under oak as well.
I never found the GR to be lots better than the R, but it's just a bit rounder. Not worth the extra £3-4 though.
I have a taste for a nice malbec at the moment, mmmm.
I think CV are one of the producers who make some of that extra time under oak as well.
Are they one of the producers who actually let it age in oak for two years?
CV allow 18months under oak for their reserva. As you know the DOC requirement is a minimum of 12 months under oak and not less than a total of 3 yrs ageing.
I didn't know they kept it for 18 months, but at about half the price I'll be sticking with the Antaño, less than 3,00€ for a 2007 Crianza on offer at the moment and nicer than the Campo Viejo 2007 Crianza (and even the Reserva 😉 ).
