i'm after something that's more or less a base layer, but i'll wear it with a t-shirt under neath sometimes too, so not too snug-fitting. it won't be worn only as a baselayer for biking/walking etc, but for working in too, under a scabby old fleece.
merino mix is fine. light is also good. i've got a merino t-shirt that is super thin, so i know it's worth having thin too.

any suggestions? only looked at montane so far. 85 quid is more than i want to spend...

Does it have to be merino? I really like the bamboo tops from BAM.

yep, was looking at them too. fit looks a bit snug?
how do they compare for not getting smelly? doesn't have to be super warm so could work

Bam stuff pretty good on the smell front. Better than synthetic but not quite merino. Tends to stay damp but warm like merino. Fit is sporty but you could size up. Service is great.

Icebreaker is fabulous, different weights and you can buy a loser fitting size. They are expensive though and I rarely wear mine for biking as a result.

Controversial, but I've got a Gap merino jumper which, though clearly not intended to be 'technical', actually does a great job as a mid layer or loose base layer - very like my icebreaker. They're usually about 40% off, so can pick one up for £22 or thereabouts for a 100% merino top.
