OK, £40-50 to spend.

Either one bottle of really special red or one red and one white for £20-ish each.

Can you recommend me a suitable label and vintage (ideally something I can pick up in a supermarket because I'm a lazy, lazy man)

Thanks!

SC

I'd be astounded if you could get a £50 bottle of wine in your local supermarket!

Get thee to a local wine merchant, they'll only be too happy to help you spend your dough

Problem is, woody, I live in Fife where Lambrini really IS considered quite classy. Nearest wine merchants would be in the Big City across the water which means some effort on my part.

You are right though.

Thanks woody!

I've also just discovered a place near in Charlestown which is about three miles from here (Dunfermline).

Luvians in St Andrews (and poss Cupar if memory serves?) used to be good when I was there a few years back

Yeah - Luvian's is very good but I don't think I'd drive to Cupar for 1 bottle of wine... Edinburgh is closer.

Vasse Felix - 2006 or 2008 Cab Sauv. Most most excellent.

Cheers guys.

Reuben's Deli could be a good shout and there is an M&S right beside it too.

l'Art du Vin will be getting a visit tomorrow too - very friendly on the phone.

I like a decent Rioja, you can find web sites that'll give info on which years are good or bad.

Stuartie. I live in Kirkcaldy and there is a great wine shop called Mostly Wine. Great place and extremely well stocked.

Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2007 is the nicest Amarone I've had.

All depends on personal preference though really. I used to love Rioja but I've gone right off it. Grenache, Syrah, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiollo, Tempranillo...all are quite different.

Good stuff guys - keep them coming.

Bobbyg - I work in Kdy so could have a wee look on the way home. Whereabouts is it?

Marques de Caceres Gran Reserva 1994. It is a cracking bottle of Rioja. A bugger to track one down though. Ive been looking for a couple of years. 2004 is also worth a sniff.

No probs mate. The couple that own it are really nice. They know their stuff and are helpful without ever being patronising.

Let us know how you get on.

Chateauneuf du Pape Vieux Telegraphe if you like lush reds. The 2007 should be pretty drinkable now.
