Currently free of the wife/GF money management app, I hear they're an expensive way to manage money!?

Yep. All you need is a spreadsheet.

List all you regular outgoings (if they are monthly, put the day of the month, if annual put the month.)

List any wages, dividends, interest etc.

You'll be left with discretionary spending.

That's the easy bit.....

Loving Money Dashboard - frightened me a bit on how I spent my money.

But it has made me realise, I've got about £100 spare in January, which is nice.

What really made a difference when I put my post-marriage spreadsheet together was to ensure that even little things are saved for month by month. For example I put aside each month little bits of cash for kids' shoes, car tyres, Wife's Birthday, swimming lessons, DIY projects; this way when these infrequent expenses come along you don't take a large hit all at once.

YNAB. Not just the software but a lot of good training, etc around it all.

Fundamentally it's a digital version of putting cash in different envelopes.

YNAB looks good, but can't get it to connect with my bank account?! Which is kinda annoying, doesn't seem to be much info about the UK version!?

Goodbudget is good, they have an app and online web based versions. You can have it on multiple devices (handy if you have a joint account).
