Hi All,

On the hunt for a new lense for my 40D. My old 30- 70mm 4- 5.6 film lense is really giving up the ghost, and the results aren't that great anyway...

Anyone got any recommendations? I've got around 200 to spend, and could do with something that's half decent in low light...

Cheers!

and as for zoom, as I once saw in an old Mag:

Budget wide angle lens: Walk further away.
Budget telephoto lens: Walk closer

😉

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 gets good reviews and can be got a bit cheaper now they have brought out the stabilised version

I use a Sigma 17-70, f/2.8-4.5 only gets f2.8 up to 18mm, but gives a great pic and has a handy range too

50mm Canon f1.8 - bargin lens, best value by miles.

had one on my 40D and the quality was amazing for the money. However, the focal length was shite for biking (although good for portraits) and the focus speed was poor. really struggled to get focussed in low light on a moving subject. Not what I would consider a do it all lens

The Tamron would be a much better bet

The auto focus is shonky on the 1.8 50mm on my 30d.

Id recommend stretching slightly and getting the Sigma 24-70 F2.8. Pretty much the only lens I use for every thing from gig photos to riding.

Yeah, the 50mm there looks darn good value

Tijuana- any idea where I could find the Tamron? I have done a search, but it's still around £300

have been looking at the sigma lense too amazon are doing a deal on it with a longer one for £189

"Walk closer to the subject"?? Not with the folks I ride with.....

One happy hippy-

Yeah, heard some v good things about that lense- is the focus as noisy as all the reviews say it is?

May have to squeeze some more blood from the stone....

Ive got the older version but motor noise has never been an issue. It focus quickly even in low light levels. Its been broken and repaired <£120 and still works fine.

I did buy a 16-35mm Canon L series but i just didnt get on with it as well so sold it on.

Give www.onestop-digital.com a go. Based in Hong Kong but just got my old man a Canon EF S 55-250 for £60 cheaper than John Lewis and £30 cheaper than Amazon. Went for the free delivery and arrived in under 10 days. Can't fault them and they even refund any VAT if you get charged!!

Nice pics btw- yeah, I'm going to have to hunt for the older version, new one is just too much. Is it 2.8 all the way through?

Yeah only worth buying the 2.8f throughout. Should be able to find the old one cheap - maybe on evilbay.

I paid <£300 for mine and its the best money I have spent on camera gear.

Cheers BTW. Plenty more @ www.facebook.com/thecoldlightofday

99% taken with the 2.8f.

These are very good, don't worry about being HK based, great service and if you google them sure the reviews will set your mind at ease

I had the 24-70 good lens, but the wide end just wasn't wide enough with the crop factor, don't forget you need to multiply by 1.6 to get the effective focal length

Still think the 17-70 would be your best bet especially for 189 quid.
Also worth a look at the Sigma 18-50, that's 2.8 throughout its range, but a bit pricier

I have the 17-70mm sigma, which is excellent, and very sharp. Most of the photos on my flickr site are taken with it:

You can do a search on flickr for photos taken with a specific lens I think...

e.g. This photo is nice and sharp, and taken with the Sigma at a slope style event in the alps (Avoriaz). [img] [/img]
