I'll cut a long story a bit short and so the bottom line is my brother needs a car for under £4k to be used mainly for commuting to and from work which is a 35 mile round trip per day. He's got one child (more to come apparently) so wants an estate.
I'm thinking:
BMW 3 series estate (04 plate model)
VW Passat
Audi A4 estate
Skoda Octavia
but as i havent bought a car that cheap for years i dont really know what model engine i should be looking for. Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated.

For those distances I would go for petrol. My 320D would only just have warmed up by 17 miles. Plus at that price there's a lot more to go wrong with diesels.
i agree with the petrol sentiment - based on repair bills alone on modern turbo dervs.
but your 320d will be warmed up by about mile 5 unless you are sitting in stationary traffic from door to door. 😉
