We went to Belfast for a few days last new year, it was great, maybe looking to do something similar this year. Ideas? Somewhere with enough interest to wander about in the day (including maybe as a base for public transport trips out to places), good pubs and eateries for the evenings.
Thought about maybe York, not Edinburgh as done that a fair bit, not London as ditto. Durham? Norwich? Leeds? Let's have your ideas.

I know you jest, but the Ivy House on xmas eve used to be a classic. Never went out much on New Year. Wouldn't recommend it to the OP as there's sod all else to do there.

In fairness I could take or leave a lot of Leeds, but I did rather enjoy the refectory one stupidly hot summer evening this year.
York is lovely too though.
Personally give me a comfy seat and decent supply of beer close to my bed on New Years and I'm happy.

Yeah, it's okay if you come for the shopping but it isn't the sort of place you'd come to for a short break.
For God's sake go somewhere in mainland Europe instead. They do new year celebrations tonnes better than the uk.

Had a fantastic weekend in Liverpool a few years ago. Friend-est people ever.
Or at the other end of the country Padstow is great out of season. Everything is open. Lots of fresh air walking on the beaches and coast path. Loads of little shops to wander around and amazing restaurants and pubs. Plus there are enough people around to make it buzzy without the hideous crowds of the summer.

Slough South is very pleasant. At least HM seems to think so. Not really a city though.
I'd go somewhere with sea, personally. New Year on the beach and a dip to celebrate. Padstow, Penzance

Keswick. Lovely walk during the day, then back into town to the numerous pubs. Everyone always spills out into the market square to see in midnight so it's a great place to be.
Glasgow.
Great place.
Loads to do. if you get bored, take a train up the west highland line to Oban.
Or a short trip to Edinburgh.
But, there really is loads to see/do in Glasgow.

As someone who regularly visits Norwich, I'm there now. I'd avoid, this is a City in decline. Pubs and bars are very quiet, even rundown. No great places to eat.
Liverpool is an amazing City, lots to see and do.
Bath would be my shout though. (Actually a Cotswold's pub would be my shout - but I'm probably a fair bit older than the OP!)
Had a nice day out in Chester last month. Could find a few days of things to do there.

I'm from Edinburgh and I would definitely recommend the Netherlands, Amsterdam in winter is gorgeous. I'd never experienced anything like it, the fireworks "display" over the canals is spectacular and their hospitality puts the Scots to shame. Don't expect sleep

We went to Seville last December which I really enjoyed
My Dad's gone to Oban, he's there right now and he's enjoying it. Glasgow is a good call
If you can get cheap flights to Geneva, then I'd suggest Annecy!
You can get the T72 from the airport direct to Annecy.
