My son is trying to fix a car he got for Christmas, as one of the gear wheels lost a tooth. It is a double wheel with 18T and 9T.

The problem is, he can not find a 18T-9T anywhere. 18-10? Yes. 18-8? No problem. 18-9? No where.

Any idea why this is the case? Any idea where he might find a replacement?

It's an UltraDrift Porsche GT3 RS 4.0 1/12.

Father Christmas got it from Hamleys. (He wasn't aware of the fine points of RC cars, but he's learning quickly!)

Could Father Christmas not take it back? It should last more than three weeks.

You probably mean the pinion at a guess? The gears that run off the motor? Just had a quick Google and those types of cars parts were/used to be hard to get if not completely impossible. I raced RC cars for many years and try to swerve people clear of these types for this very reason.

Try the place you bought it from to begin with, failing that email the manufacturer directly.

I'm all for taking it back for a replacement. If it's lasted less than a month before breaking, it's not fit for purpose, surely.

Does the gear ratio actually matter? Can't you just use 18-10?

It would depend on the spur rears as the step in teeth would need to match as you can't mesh both gears separately
