So, after previous deliberations, we've done some thinking and internet car trawling and found this
Used 2019 RED Honda Jazz 1.3 i-VTEC S 5dr, 20,747 miles - cinch
It's what we're after, price/spec/age/mileage wise it looks on par with similar cars for sale at local dealerships, and having someone deliver a car to me appeals as I don't really care about a test drive or want to trawl around forecourts (it's just a car) and Cinch give a 14-day no quibble return anyway.
There is an outstanding recall, I think for the fuel pump, but Cinch tell me they'll get that sorted before it's delivered.
MOT history is not clean but looks okay, but is it a bit odd that all the brakes would need doing at 17k miles?
HONDA JAZZ - Check MOT history – GOV.UK
I'm happy to admit that I know very little about this kinda stuff though, so what do the STW petrolheads reckon?
I have a red Jazz and it's been great.
Expect, constantly changing the battery in the fob. Carry spares in the glove box.
Magic seats are brilliant, like having a van with windows.
Red cars are the best :-).
Ohhh Squirrel....
It's only brake pads that were worn, not a problem with the braking system.
Have you seen how often pensioners are on the brakes! 🙂
Every car I've had has had new pads and discs at some point.
The brakes could be because it had sticky callipers. This can cause one of the pair to wear quickly. This happened to my Golf at five years old and 25k miles although it was only one rear calliper.
The second option is that the MOT tester was a bit zealous. This also happened to me with a Skoda Superb- I was told it needed new pads and discs at 14000 miles…it didn’t and was still on the same brakes when I sold it with 35000 miles on it.
Only thing that would put me off is the lack of Sat Nav or any option to use CarPlay or GooglePlay.
The lack of alloy wheels suggests it a base model so may not have been an option.

Not really bothered about lack of SatNav, as in-car ones are never really as good as Google Maps on the phone. Can connect the phone via bluetooth for other music/calls etc. Reversing sensors/camera would have been nice but hey-ho.
It is the base model (the S), and probably actually prefer having steelies over alloys either given the state of the roads around here.
Looks fine. One budget tyre on the front though. I am also looking for a Jazz, but gen 2 probably and almost all of them are running around on random budget tyres from what I have seen.
But a phone running a mapping app of your choice (Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps etc) through a decent sized built in screen is better than just a phone mounted on an ugly, wobbly phone mount.
I agree - most built in Sat Navs are rubbish though!

Yeah, true, but it's not a biggie

I guess that's the one that the MOT found. They'll all get replaced for all-season ones fairly quickly anyway.
We have a jazz. It’s been fine. The engine can feel a touch weak. But i think the auto box makes it feel worse. The interior is amazing. My phone sits in an arm suctioned to the windscreen then with a support on the dash. Never seen it as an issue.
Every time we see a Jazz on the road I feel compelled to do a Jazz hands gesture
Erm,.. where were we - great little cars, can feel underpowered when fully laden but that might not be a regular thing for you. Honda built quality is great, replacement parts prices less so
I’m happy to admit that I know very little about this kinda stuff though, so what do the STW petrolheads reckon?
It'll never make it up t'hill 🙂
You need at least 500bhp and 4WD where you live.
Eff me that seems a lot for a five year old run about.
I can't say I disagree, but it seems to be par for the course.

Well this is to replace her car, but the van might be going at some point and then I might need something..... 😉

People say using my tank for my two mile commute and school run is road-destroying overkill and an environmental travesty, but that one day last year had perfect conditions for tracked vehicles and the soot helped melt the snow for everyone.
You’ll never need another. Our CRV is now 16 years old and just passed 195k miles. It passed its MOT last week with one advisory. I don’t think it’s ever going to die!
The engine can feel a touch weak
That was the main issue when I had a Jazz. Borderline dangerous trying to pull out sometimes, in my opinion.
Suppose really we should all be driving Jazz sized cars, or smaller, but with most people buying bigger and bigger cars I can't help but imagine a ping pong bat and ball situation in a collision with a battery suv.
I have a red Jazz and it’s been great.

Ditto! Run it on vpower to take the power to a throbbing 101bhp.
Awesome car, in an understated way.
Rear end ain't great, suspension a bit basic.
I run it on cross climates all year round.
3 pallets go vertically in the back seat area for wood burner purposes.

Well, given it's replacing a 19 year old Mazda 1.4, and our other vehicle is a 20 year old diesel van, it's not like we're used to drag race starts anyway.
No comment on the car.
But we bought off Cinch and they were good to thier word and warranty. Car arrived with a borderline tyre due to cracks. They replaced locally. 8 weeks after buying the window switches played up - they sent us to main dealer straight away. Car was exactly as described other than the iffy tyre.
Eff me that seems a lot for a five year old run about.
And yet it still represents considerably better value than the 16 year old 5 grand one from the other thread.

Judging from the mileage, it could well be the discs corroding and wearing the pads, it’s barely covering 4500/year.

It’s what I used for my job, swapping between two/three cars a day, covering roughly 100,000 miles over two years, there wasn’t any realistic option - there are plenty of good, solid screen mounts available, and a modern smart phone screen has a bigger screen than any actual satnav unit, plus you get map updates more easily.
I’m not sure what sort of head unit a Jazz comes with, but if it’s a DIN-standard unit then a replacement with a large screen and phone connection could be had from a local car spares emporium.
I used cinch and post purchase they took a lot of chasing but they did eventually resolve issues, including tyre replacement to ensure same type on all four corners and sorting out paintwork
lesson was that it is much easier to resolve stuff if it recorded by the delivery dude in first instance. So give him a cup of tea, make friends and get him on your side before he fits the delivery check. Then keep a chronology of contacts with Cinch. I had to go via complaints process to get stuff sorted and it was helpful to have a list of all contacts. They did sort eventually though.

They won't - That's a standard main dealer scam....
Ford tried to con me on that old chessnut, with a brand new Fiesta (mk5 or mk6, I can't remember, I think it was a MK5) with some BS line 'disks below reccomended thickness'
"stick it up yer chuff" was my reply.
Far, far, FAR, more likely is the brakes get used so gently and not very often, the pads/disks don't ever get heated up enough to bed in and work effectivley.
Nothing an 'Italian tune up' wont fix.
From our local friendly MOT tester, the only issue they really see on Jazz's is the rear brakes. The handbrake is quite low performance, but I think what they were talking about is the shoes sticking in the drum.
handbrake is quite low performance
That kept coming up on my MOTs. Nothing specifically wrong with it, just weak.
I traded mine in a long time ago for scrap value at a garage. Most unpleasant sounds coming from clutch/gearbox and I wanted something different. But instead they sold it on for similar money as it was. Like any good cockroach it's still alive now according to MOT checker.
That’s a standard main dealer scam….
Hyundai i10 was in main dealer for warranty work a few months ago. They did a complimentary “vehicle health check”, all very professional with video walk around and everything. Said brakes needed disks and pads and wanted nearly £300. It was already booked into my local indie garage for MOT and service the following week so I left it. Once there they said that the brakes were less than 20% worn and had many thousands of miles left. He rolled his eyes when I told him about main dealer and said they see this all of the time.
And yet it still represents considerably better value than the 16 year old 5 grand one from the other thread.
Yep, and as with that car, there's also a premium for the unusually low mileage on this one.
Much better buy though.

I'm not sure about that you know, similar age/spec cars with more miles were going for basically the same price locally when we did the Autotrader trawling. I think the only premium we're paying is that we can't haggle anything off the sticker price, and I'll pay that for the lack of hassle and the 14 day trial.

Fair enough, I made an unjustified assumption there.
Just had a quick look on AT - your choice looks like a really good option.
My mum and dad both have/had Jazzes and love them.
Have a 2018 (same gen as yours) with 70,000 miles and it's been amazingly reliable.
Issues?
Paint chips very easily, especially noticable on the bonnet.
Seized rear brake caliper - very common apparently but cheap to replace.
Underbonnet fasteners and brackets corrode - doesn't seem as solidly built as the previous gen.
Undertrays needed securing thanks to potholed roads.
Had to relearn how to drive a normally aspirated petrol! Needs revving to get anywhere, but actually plenty fast enough when you get the hang of it.
Apart from that it's been great!
