I can't see a brocken spectre there, I do see a fog bow though.

A Brockenspectre is circular, usually with an image of the observer in the middle, you only ever see them at high altitude iirc. As others have said the OP's picture is a fogbow. Nice piccy mind.

oh! I saw a brockenspectre whilst coming in to land in madrid! everyone I told about this weird circular rainbow just looked at me like I was insane (its an expression I'm used to so I never bothered to press the point!)

Now i thought a brocken spectre was the shadow of the observer, and the surrounding rainbow was something extra and called something like the glory.
All rainbows are circular exept the world gets it the way if youre not high enough.

I ghave seen brokenspecktre on Ben Ledi - not exactly high. The OPs pic to me looks like he would get a brokenspectre if he was standing in the right place - you need the sun coming over your shoulder to project your shadow onto the cloud below you. Is it a fog bow without your shadow in it?

That's Ben Ledi above - obviously a Brocken spectre hot spot!

Well you know what I've never seen or even heard of anything like that before in all my life until tonight.

What causes that then?

I seriously thought the Fogbow thing was just taking the mick.

I'd never heard of one. Brilliant pics though.
