Seeing as we Scots get more than out fair share of rain, I'm starting to think this might be a good idea for watering the garden and the like.

We Scots don't need to water our gardens!

Wife uses one. Seems to work OK. Just make sure that you place the butt high enough off the ground so that you can get your watering can under the tap.

Donald, I hear you, but I had to water some plants this morning as it had been 5 days with no rain!

Can you believe it? FIVE WHOLE DAYS!!!

Looked into it and rather than go for the standard green garden centre versions would probably go for something like this. You can get them vis Ebay and other places. Just have to make them look pretty if you feel that way inclined. There are other options on there as well.

The secret is to only grow plants that don't need watered every five days.

You can tell which ones they are by not watering your garden for five days and seeing what is still alive 🙂

Yes, mine collects rain off the shed roof and funnels into water butt, takes care of my watering needs all year round.

Check out council for possible subsidised deals too.

We may have got ours cheapy cheap that way, or that may just have been the compost bins. I can't remember.

I believe the water utilities count this as theft... whilst at once charging you for the runoff ?

I'v heard of it being treated that way when done on industrial premises on a large scale basis, but not at home or on allotments.

We have one at the back of the house for watering the garden. Will be putting one on the shed / greenhouse when it gets built too

What a quaint old-fashioned idea. Funny how concepts from forty-fifty years ago are being touted a great new way of doing things. Oh, and I really hope sfb is joking, and left off the winky. How can collecting rainwater possibly be regarded as theft? Unless, of course, the utility company regards itsself as Godlike. Or possibly he's thinking of community centres being charged for waste-water disposal because the rainwater goes down the drain.
