If you don't like his/their current music, have a read of this and it might give you some insight why he's maybe gone down a different path
If a musician spent his whole career churning out exactly the same old stuff, it would be a long and boring road. Musicians change with the times and their experiences.
I don't particularly like the path Arctic Monkeys took, but it doesn't mean they suck, they are still fantastic musicians

I think In time new roman is a great album. Saw them twice live last year and they still smash it! Musics all subjective though, one mans meat is another mans poison an all that.
I love Songs for the Deaf, but more for Grohls drumming!
Generally preferred Kyuss to qotsa. Love the sludgy riff vibes.

Yeah I kind of went off QOTSA ages ago after they were my favourite band for years. They had 3 absolutely banging albums culminating in the perfect Songs for the Deaf. Everthing after that has been really patchy.
I saw one of their first UK shows then another 6 or 7 times after that. I've seen them be 'best live band ever' but I've also seen them drunk and fat and witless.
I'd like them to be good again but the latest album isn't the one for me.
I didn't know anything about his personal life. Sounds rough.
Inspired me to give Times new Roman a spin this morning, thanks.
You have to remember that while SFTD is a brilliant album, Grohl says he was ready to give up on music before being asked to do the drums for it so the album is also responsible for the utter turgid second rate back of a pub dad rock of all Foo Fighters albums have been since.
Tried to get tickets for Queens in Halifax but the process was so long winded I gave up.
I realised I had never knowingly heard a QOTSA song so went on spotify to have a listen. sounds like any one of a dozen bands - nothing much there at all for me. Not great not awful just meh! Just seemed like a collection of rock cliches
Of course they could still create a great live show as that is about more than just the tunes.

Rated-R is varied, interesting and certainly not a collection of rock cliches.
Songs for the Deaf is a chugging, pshychadelic banger with not a bad moment on it.

Yeah, have never heard anything from the Foo Fighters to merit the adulation. Haven't tried hard enough perhaps.
TJ - try Blues for the Red Sun by Kyuss, Rated - R or Songs for the Deaf by QotSA. I think rock cliches is unfair, they are all visceral, powerful rock/metal. Not exactly introspective or reflective listening and for the love of god don't pay too much attention to some of the lyrics 😂

Does the Times New Roman font reflect the music on any way? Why would you call your album that? Google/nme says it's dark sludgy brutal. Could give it a try I guess!

You're right there. AC/DC have two songs.
I love Songs for the Deaf and I don't expect any band to continue to amaze/entertain me forever. Their taste/direction changes and mine does too, so it's natural to diverge. Unless of course we are talking Zappa.
Zappa - I loved Joes Garage back in the early 80s but hadn't heard it since until recently. I tried again and time has not been kind to it or I have grown up. 🙂

Ta. After the first 45 seconds I thought "this is going to be good" but the rest of it let it down. Certainly not rock cliche tho and at least trying to go somewhere different. Ended up a bit prog rock ish 🙂
Nope - I think they are not for me. Not crap and I can see why some folk like them and much better than most modern metal / rock just Meh for me

Slo burn > Unida for post Kyuss bands in this house.
Foos were ok for the first two maybe three albums but totally went through a period where they sounded like a Foos cover band for a while.
I quite like Times New Roman and think Like Clockwork is their best effort after Rated R and the self titled one. Still think Kyuss were better though. Welcome to Sky Valley being my favourite. I even have a soft spot for And The Circus Leaves Town.

New album is fantastic. lyrically it's genius and sonically too. Saw them live last year and it's in the top 2 or 3 gigs I've ever been to.
They are a band that's evolved massively over their career and for the better.

Luckily I haven't. Though I have listened to great deal of Zappa post Joe's Garage, including his classical offerings with Ensemble Intercontemporain under Pierre Boulez and Ensemble Modern.
Anyway back to QOTSA, this is when I first became aware of them and shouted to my OH "get in here quick". On Later with Jools Holland.

Elephant riders and PRF could almost be by different bands, both class albums but their latter work never did it for me. Also my old bassist left a mildly abusive message in Neil Fallon's answering machine. I think it was he's married to the sister of a guy in a band who we did some shows with and we used to hang out with a lot, she was complaining that they didn't play the UK enough and they should take us on as support when they did come over, she was hammered, we were a terrible band, the guy laughed and said why don't you tell him yourself, rung his number and handed tye phone over.
Oh and I've shared a stage with Josh Homme, I wasn't supposed to but after interviewing Nick Oliveri (name drop central tonight) I got lost on the way out of the backstage dressing rooms at the Leadmill and walked on stage while he was finishing soundcheck, I panicked and instead of turning round and walking off, walked right in front of him and jumped off the stage, kind of fell over then sprinted out the door...
Oh man that video is a reminder of how awesome QOTSA were with Nick Oliveri. They lost so much when they kicked him out. I saw them about 4 times with Nick.

The best time was in Manchester when we got to the gig so early that there was no one around but we could hear sound check so we just walked towards it. We found the room with all the lights off and the band on stage incuding Mark Lanegan just playing full songs. 4 of us shuffled in and sat right at the back and had a 20 minute or so private gig. It was amazing. We dipped out to find the rest of our crew and tried to guide them back in but by then the barriers were up and lots of staff milling around.
It was good while it lasted.

That's really interesting because
a) I'm pretty sure I read him saying that recording the drums for it was a right pain in the arse, as the producer insisted on recording the drums and cymbals separately for every track, and it was a really tedious process
b) so why did he go back to making middle of the road stadium bilge instead of doing more drumming?? I really love his drumming. His songs.... Meh
A mate had a beer with him backstage at Glastonbury one year, and emerged with yet another story to add onto the pile of 'yeah Dave grohl is just a really nice bloke' evidence.

The current stuff is different from the earlier heavy stuff & I love Kyuss too, some of the new stuff I like.

This reminds me of a Dave Grohl story.
I used to be good mates with a band who had some success. They have a song that still gets played on 6 Music fairly regularly about 15 years later.
Anyway the Foo Fighters were headlining whatever festival they were playing and somehow they got speaking to eachother. They realised that they were both scheduled to play the same festival in Germany or something the next weekend so instead of driving there in the rusty Sprinter they were invited onto the Foos private jet.*
They all came home with loads of 'Dave Grohl is the nicest bloke ever' stories.
*Their poor tech crew (2 lifelong mates) had to pack the van and do the drive on their own.
