My cheap PVR is pissing me off, basically missing recording stuff, also it's generally always been crap (TWF).

Is a cheap Humax a safe buy?

Do any of them do internet catch up TV?

On freeview btw.

Do you have a ps3? If so, then look for a playtv box on eBay 2nd hand. They don't make them anymore, but they plug into the ps3 and then the ps3 acts as a brilliant pvr. Mine cost me £13!

we bought a humax pvr9300 from richer sounds, one of their refurbs, on a whim. it's been excellent. i was a erring a bit as it's not hd but it's been a really good buy. does what it;s told, good picture quality, dead easy to use the on screen menu. no catch up tho', but, with series record, you dont need catch up. you just record everything!! 😀

Hunax is good, a few annoying bugs but once you've figured out the workarounds they're not that much worse than Sky+

ive got a sony one

its the schnizzle, not HD but upscaling is good
weve had it for 4 years+ and its still as good as new and never missed a beat, use it quite heavily - have about 3 series on record at any one time lots of films, can burn them to dvd too, but tbh i never bother

i like it becaue the bravia sync thing means i can use the same remote for my tv, ps3, pvr

We've got a Humax HD freeview box - perhaps the Fox T2? It's pretty good.

I think that most times it fails to record, we have been able to attribute it to erm, user error....

I have had a Humax 9200 for 6 years now. Its been brilliant still going. The picture isn't as good as an upscaled TV, if you like football get the HD one

Al- freeview or freesat?

Either way - we've got both from Humax direct (usually ex-demo in "as new" condition) and always happily recommend them.

Overall 10/10 from us- only negs on freeview one is a bug where if you've selected to record something in advance then get home to start watching it before it ends - then when it finishes recording - you have to watch from the start (so some furious fast forwarding- grrr!).

The freesat one is more reliable - but it lets us record less channels whilst watching others, and the "guide" isnt as friendly as freeview.

Anyway, either is recommended. And if you have a problem, the customer service is very good.

If you get a PS3 you automatically get iPlayer, ITV player, 4OD etc, and then the addition of a PlayTV box sorts you out for the PVR side of things. 😀

Erm - our Freeview box has something to do with the internet - can't remember if you need another adaptor box or just a cable though......

Spec here: http://www.humaxdigital.com/uk/products/product_stb_terrestrial_hdrfoxt2.aspx

it says it has internet tv portal as a future upgrade....

more here on pocket lint from early 2011 suggests that it's been released....

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/38172/humax-hd-fox-t2-tv-portal-beta-upgrade

Erm, just looked on my box in the settings - it says

"Humax TV Portal"

but when I try to connect it says no network connection, which is fair enough as I don't have it connected to a network. Looks like the functionality is in place though. Perhaps look on AVforum - they'll probably be more info on it there.

Then if me I'd go for the £109 one here:

http://humaxdirect.co.uk/product.asp?ProdRef=10067

#Edit: sorry, the last two posters reminded me: freeview doesnt as standard come with iplayer etc. Freesat does.

Anyway, for standard tv+ (pause, record, series link kind of thing) for £109 that's a really good deal, but not HD which doesnt matter in your case.

Is the old C&W dish outside gonna work with freesat?

C&W dish outside

Are we now in some sort of Flintstones reality show?

Honestly - I've no idea, but digital came along recently - so I'd guess: no. Not at the very least without replacing the lnb, possibly cabling, and possibly realigning the dish. But honestly - I dont know for sure.
