Latest sonos update lets you select the Sonos speakers directly from the Spotify app. Not quite Airplay but about time!
Still no Audible audiobook compatibility though 👿
Pray tell, can I use VLC on my windows laptop and route the sound through to a Sonos speaker without using the proprietary Sonos software?
Unlikely. But if you have the Spotify app on your PC you can play that via the Sonos speaker.

The Sonus player was pretty rubbish for Spotify...
And it works once I shut down the Sonus app.

Been working well here all day. Nice to be able to listen to the daily mixes on the sonos.
I have 2 x Bose Soundtouch's and after a slow start with the App it was great until a few days ago when they updated it!!!
