I'm after some advice on how good these Ring Doorbell things are.

They are on sale at Argos for £89 and tempted to get one but not sure if they are actually a useful thing or just another useless gadget.

Link here.

Have you ever heard your doorbell ring and thought "I wish I could answer this from my phone?" If not, I'm going to say useless gadget.

You also need to pay extra for something that will actually ring in the house when the bell is pressed.

I've thought about one of these and a parcel locker to go with it. No more waiting for a delivery, answer the door from your phone and get them to leave the parcel in the secure locker.

I've seen the scaremongering TV ads and I'm going with "useless gadget". Get a dog instead.

If there's a TV advertising campaign for it then its clearly a must-have, groundbreaking innovative product that will probably revolutionise the way we live our lives

Oh wait..... hang on a minute..... no.... I meant the total opposite of that

No more waiting for a delivery

Have you seen Amazon Key? They are rolling it out in the States. Basically you install an Amazon lock + CCTV kit on your front door and then a courier can gain access to your house via a one-time code to drop off your parcels.

They also have a version that can open the boot of your car.

Yes, that Amazon Key's not had any issues;

Now security researchers have found that the camera can be disabled and frozen from a program run from any computer within Wi-Fi range, reports Wired. That means a customer watching a delivery will only see a closed door, even if someone opens the door and goes inside

FYI you need both your upload and download Wi-Fi speed to be in excess of 1mbps for it to work reliably.

That Argos offer is for the older version, so don't be too fooled by the discount.

I bought 2 at Christmas when argos priced them wrong.

I gave one to my dad and kept the other.

You have to pay about £25 a year to record your motion alerts on their secure cloud. If you don't it still works but you can't record anything suspicious should you need it.

My dad's works perfect, he's on the edge of an estate so less wifi interference and less passing traffic. He charges it every 4 months.

Mine on the other hand is surrounded by houses and I've got WiFi interference. I've tried changing WiFi channels but not found any way of improving it. Mine lasts around 7 days before charging as it keeps looking for a signal.

I'm just about to order a doorbell WiFi booster and chime to help with the signal.

When it works, it works great, comes through to my mobile, can have clear conversations with the postman etc.

Night View is OK but if people get too close they look like a ghost.

If I'd paid £89 for it, I'd be disappointed, for £20 it's OK.

Personally I think there are better ones out there. I think nest and hive are bringing one out this year. Save your money for them. I think you can save you data on your own cloud so a £25 a year saving.

Thanks

Well! I installed one about a year ago so I could hear the doorbell when I was working in the garden office. It's served that purpose perfectly, but it also came in handy to prevent us getting burglerised this past Easter. We were visiting the in-laws and got a notification at 3.30am saying there was movement at the front door - and we could see a guy quickly move out the way when he saw the LEDs light up on the doorbell. I would have just went back to sleep, but the missus decided to call the cops. They arrived at the house within 4 minutes, and sure enough caught the little scrote in the back garden with a shovel, trying to gemmy open the conservatory doors. We watched as he was put in the back of the police car. He's since been charged, but failed to show up for his hearing, so a warrant is now out for his arrest.

Worth every penny in my experience!

Just the chance of this happening makes it worth £100 of anyone's money.

I have a border collie, sometimes he goes off when there's nobody there. That makes him 120% effective 90% of the time

I'm more impressed with a 4 minute response time from the police .

Battery life is poor, though. Although I believe some of them have an energy saving mode involving a bath chair and Homes Under The Hammer.

I got an HD wired/wifi motion sensor CCTV unit that records to micro sd or harddrive, alerts to my phone every time it's triggered & can view it at any time on my phone
