Whilst we're doing film PSA's: Alien 3 is on Film Four. It's easily the third best Alien film and quite underrated, IMO. Charles Dance is excellent, as ever.

Is it the Director’s Cut as that is far superior?

Doesn't say, and I don't think I've seen the DC so I can't really tell.

Not my fave Alien but at least got Fincher making movies.

Aliens shown the other night was the extended edition, repeated Weds if you missed it.

Yeah, it's definitely not the best of the bunch, but I really like the atmosphere and style of the whole thing: The audio sounds like the recording of an autopsy.

It's a mess IMO, how much of that was Fincher's fault it's hard to say but he wasn't happy with what ended up being released and had nothing to do with the re-cut either.

It was a brave move on someone's part to give him another directing gig having seen Alien 3 though tbf it was a commercial success..

Fincher wasn’t allowed the freedom he wanted in Alien 3 as the studios were pushing for a release for the film after spending millions already on a film that had go no where. Fincher refused to do a recut as he disowned the film, the ‘director’ of the recut who I can’t recall used Fincher’s notes of his original vision to produce the recut.

Yup, third best Alien film after Aliens and Alien. The story of it's making is fascinating. It's a shame they didn't kill off the franchise there, nothing of any merit came after it.

Not really. I haven't watched it since it was released but I remember being disappointed. I was a Jean-Pierre Juenet fan prior to watching but (desperate resurrection premise aside) I thought it was dull, plodding and pretty nasty. It replaced suspense with gore, the action sequences were unoriginal, non of the characters were sympathetic or agreeable and it took the franchise absolutely nowhere and added nothing to it, in fact it basically tanked it.

Prometheus is on tonight I see.

Alien 3 is flawed, but it's not that bad at all.

Fincher's original version was 3 hours long and he was forced to cut nearly an hour from it and change the narrative by the studio. It was changed so much that he disowned it as his own work.

The 'assembly cut' was remade from his studio notes after he refused to have anything to do with the studio again. It's a much better film, but don't go thinking is aliens all over again, because it's just as bleak and nihilistic.

What do I know. I saw the good in David Lynch's Dune.

Was the good bit Sting in his weird underpants?

Resurrection was scripted by Joss Wherein who pretty much disowned it, as badly cast and badly directed.

Alien 3 is far better than resurrection and both are better than Prometheus all are better than covenant

the unrequited versions seemed much more interesting than what was produced for Alien 3. The Assembly cut does add a more religious slant, which Fincher was going for in the first place.

This makes for interesting reading, including the forgotten teaser trailer promising Aliens on earth

I first saw Alien 3 on a pirate video on a 18 inch portable TV,  it was filmed using a camcorder, you can imagine how hard it was to follow.  They only filmed the middle of the screen and ever since, the star has been known as to me and my mates as "gorney wea".

The assembly cut is much better than the theatre release decimation. There is a hybrid cut. Pretty decent cast such a shame. Love the bleak, dirty and claustrophobic tone of it, could be time for a re-watch me tinks.

Hollywood went through a period of sanitising adult themed films to fit them into lower age rating categories, allegedly for better box office takings! There were loads of half-arsed horror films around the time and franchises that were softened up with child sidekicks for example, in order to appeal to more mainstream audiences. Rape scenes are always controversial, it's not difficult to see how they often end up on the cutting room floor!

Anyone reckon there's any legs in a re-make? Sigourney might be a bit long in tooth, who would you cast as Ellen Ripley now?

How'd it go wysiwyg? Prompted by this thread I gave the "Assembly Cut" a watch the other night. I've got to say I thought it was pretty poor and with added demerit of being half an hour longer than the theatrical release. I can't really give a back-to-back comparison because it's years since I watched Alien cubed and after suffering through the AC I'm not wasting a further 2 hours on it.

Well they've pretty much done that already, Noomi Rapace and Katherine Watson were chosen.

Well I enjoyed it, it's nowhere near as meh as I remember. It's not a bad film by any stretch, and the  idea of not the dog, bit more meat on some characters padded it well.  It's no Aliens but it never would be, had the previous instalments never existed it would have stood up well.

Second snow day for me today. Yesterday was Thor:Ragnarok and this afternoon will be the assembly cut of Alien3. I actually quite liked the theatrical release so will be interesting to compare the two.

Don't know yet. Got 10 minutes in and then got a message that my wife's school was also closing for the day so my vegging on the sofa plans changed...

This is accurate. Covenant was the Mother of all letdowns.
