For them that's interested, I've received an amber alert from Aurorawatch. This normally means a fairly good chance of an ok display of northern lights, possibly visible as far south as Newcastle.

Feel free to wave your willy about your own lights, how much better the light pollution is in London, point out that your BMW is the ideal car from which to watch the night sky, ask which tyres are best suited to not looking where you're going, post the daily mash's response, etc, etc

How long they last and what tiome they appear is a mystery. Keep watching the sky.

Last time I saw them it was a red alert, show lasted a couple of hours, peaking around 10PM. Covered the whole sky in a range of colours.
I've also seen what looked like a red/green searchlight being shone across the sky and green curtains to the north so effects can vary as can the time

Harrumph. You may get to see the northern lights, but I have a slightly better chance of hosting the U.S X-Factor.
