Just had the MRI result back and have 2 prolapsed. I'm not suffering with sciatica but struggle with low back pain after 20 mins on the bike, Enough to make me stop. Physiotherapy has been recommended but I've not had much luck with Physio in the past. Anyone had a good outcome from this and got back into pain free cycling?
Stick with the physio and play around with different positions on the bike. Did c4/5, c5/6 and c6/7. A different experience from yours and physio didnt work for me, had to have surgery. All ok now but had to raise the bars on the road bike a bit! Stick with conservative treatment for now, but if you're in pain go back to your G.P and ask to be re-referred.
my wife had one do that, physio did help get there after a few months, but she has to be careful still and has the odd bad day with in years later
She doesn't ride really but does run a bit (5k once maybe twice a week) and does circuits/zumba type stuff
just be religious about doing the exercises you're given to help it, slacking with 'em's not the way to sort it, don't over do it though.
good luck with it
I had a prolapse L5/S1 about two years ago, to the point I couldn't walk that well (really bad Sciatica and foot numb). Tried Physio, then a micro-discectmy, then more Physio but none of it worked.
I then had the disc removed and fused with a cage and a variety of nuts and bolts. Its getting better now and I can do about two hours over Swinley. It seems to be taking ages but it is getting there, it beats not being able to ride.
Good days/and some not so good days. Good Luck.
Thanks guys. I shall persevere with the physio, seems like patience is called for too. ๐
Had prolapsed disc(s) (don't know which ones) and had sciatica big style. Lots of core strength physio sorted me out and I was as good as new. Still keep up the core exercises as a preventative type thing.
Took 3-4 months to get sorted IIRC.
disectomy surgery for LEG pain gets very good results. For BACK pain the water is a muddied to say the least.
Have seen many patients who have gone and done pilates/yoga and come back saying it makes a big difference. No science to back it up but may be worth a go....
(especially as cyclists CAN get tight hamstrings which can cause lower back issues at times
L5/S1 full thickness tear here (playing rugby 12 years ago). I get occasional sciatic pain and my back muscles are generally quite tight. Also, I work at a desk, which definitely isn't ideal!
Best thing I've ever done for it is core strengthening exercises and regular stretching. First thing I do every morning is roll out of bed and do a load of back stretches. I also find a hot bath followed by ice pack on the lower back helps reduce muscle tightness and hence pain.
L5/s1 done here 18 months ago. Awful then but after lots of exercises and lots of osteopathy, it's much better. Not perfect though.
Osteopath was a genius.

Yep, as with others here, seen it, done it, had the operation but back on the bike now and doing the exercises.
Pilates caused a lot of my problems so see a physio and get some exercises recommended by someone who is trained properly.
I had the same last year and with physio, lots of exercises and at least half a year off the bike I have pretty much gotten over it.
I could have been back on the bike earlier, but it's hard to get going in November.
Good luck with it and don't slack on the exercises. I still do them most days
Thanks all, I missed the whole summer on the bike ๐ so time to get it mended.
Well, if it helps, I went to Morzine a few weeks a go and had a whale of a time - it does get better!!
