Value for money wise, I think TWSBIs are one of the best FPs around. So cheap, yet look good and write great. Both of mine are clear demonstrators, really like them (though still favour the ease of a capless fountain pen)

Love the Lamy one above

What do you want to know? If you’re interested in the TWSBI it’s probably best to contact via email.

they're a bit of a cliche, but they are really nice:

What's the deal with posh ball point pens? Are they better to write with, or is it just a case of looking nice? And presumably you have to replace the refill occasionally - so do you have to fork out a fortune for those to keep pen writing well?

I've got a Porsche carbon roller pen for the home desk - pretty nice thing but day to day I use a Visconti. Really nice feel to using it.

Yeah, look nice (subjective I realise), feel nice. Mine goes through refills quite fast, but they're cheap, so... meh. Not that different to watches really, a cheap one works fine, but an expensive one is just a nice thing to have.

Anyone got a recommendation for a fountain pen that writes well rather than being fancy? Using a cheap one at the moment that is ok but interested in what is available

Oooh lilac ink. Must try

Be careful, I was under the impression that priests or chaplains traditionally wrote in purple. The colour indication the occupation, similarly Doctors can write in red.

At the risk of sounding (even more) like a w anchor, you should probably go to your LPS and try some. Sounds silly, but some pens suit a writing style better than others. Different nib flexibility/thickness etc.

For example, while I love my old Conway Stewarts, the nibs are a little too 'scratchy' for my writing style. My '51 and Townsend Cross however? Perfect.

So, test [s]ride[/s] write, then decide. 🙂

Rhodia Webbie is the best notebook I've ever had. I've also got a Leuchtterm for when the Webbie runs out just to see what it's like. I have a Midori Travellers Notebook for making notes on the go.

Currently trialling some microtip pens Pilot GTEC-C4 is my favourite.

For higher end stuff I've got my eye on one of these:

That reminds me, has anyone got a good Chinese domestic brand pen?
I've heard lots about them being very hit and miss. Which is weird as most of the big western companies manufacture there. There must be some excellent stuff out there.

Hmm I'm not sure that's right. I mean anyone can write in whatever colour but you can't expect to be taken seriously using wacky purple/green/red inks. I'm a doctor and I've never seen any doctor write in red. It definitely would be frowned upon by some where I work. There are concerns about scanning and copying notes which means only dark inks are used. In the NHS at least.

Which means that in order to write using interesting inks, one has to fly below the radar of most people. I like really really dark (but not black) inks. My favourites are Diamine midnight (a dark purple-black) and Sailor Miruai ("Seaweed" - a dark teal really). I'm a stationery rebel 😈

Historically operation notes used to be written in red ink as it made them easier to find when all the notes were filed together. I used to enjoy the variety.
Sadly now most hospitals enforce a writing in black only policy (red didn't easily photocopy on old machines) and now we're having to type them instead. No room for individual expression although possibly more legible!

Rhodia looks tempting. I'm using Leuchtterm because they come in many weird colours so I can easily identify my current notebook from previous ones and from colleagues' boring black notebooks. Now I am waiting for the new ones with red dots to come out before replenishing my stock!

Damn. Now that's reminded me of another essential item that I "need".

Makes a change from watch porn, I guess.

What new ones pray tell?

I have an Amazon alert setup for the price drops to replenish mine. Ooh. And stickers help me differentiate my Webbie.

Apparently Leuchtterm are soon bringing out a number of new "colourways" and also dotted notebooks with red dots instead of black.

From an e-mail I saw ...

New Colours: Fresh Green and Ice Blue (available beginning October)
Fresh Green. It is fresh, bright and powerful. Greenery is currently a trend. An expression of desire for nature and green (DIGITAL DETOX). It is part of modern lifestyle. Moreover it is the colour of 2017 and meets the current trend.
Ice Blue. It is cool and clean. A very strong colour – natural as Fresh Green… these two colours complement each other very well.

Metallic Master Slim (A4+) (available beginning of October)

Bullet Journal in Nordic Blue (available mid of November)
The famous Bullet Journal is now also available in our very successful Nordic Blue.

RED DOTS Edition (end of November)
Red dots… we all know about the success of the dotted ruling. Now we have red dots with red page edges.

Graphite Pencils
Perfect supplement for notebook and Pen Loop – available in 17 colours.

I got fed up with the waste of disposable biros and got a Fisher space pen, kept losing the buggers tho so it got expensive.
I did like it and it had the 'bonus' of being able to write underwater, but whenever I tried it the paper went soggy.

I've tried a couple of pens on recommendation via eBay from the usual suspect - Jinhao - a hooded one and a Lamy Vista copy. They were like two quid each or something daft.

Both were really nice writers, had to flush them first to get things going but really you should do that with all pens.

The hooded one wrote really well for a good while then decided it was going to dump all the ink through the nib in pretty much one go.

The faux-Vista (599 is model number), is still going strong.

Worth a try for a couple of quid, certainly.

But as a pen tart at work, I've got a gorgeous Delta fountain pen filled with some ice Diamine blue/black ink...

Leffeboy Parker 51. Would get me vote.
Tried others just does the job.

Loads around on evilbay and hold value to if not for you just put it back on the bay. Not sure what your budget is. 51 around 40 quid.

To the rest of the tread I love Viscontti Van Rough but can't justify it.

Given they're things I use daily - pens / ink / paper is something I get particular about. I love my vintage Dunill fountain pen with variety of inks - currently Diamine cartridges, I like Schneider Slider 755 rollerball inserts, Zebra mechanical pencils, Caran dAche Fluo Line Felt Highlighters, and Zig Millenniums. Superior Labor pen roll too 🙂

Mark & Fold do a mean notebook - have stockpiled their Mark One version - Naturalis Vanilla Smooth paper.

I use a Waterman pencil, 0.5mm, but then my writing is small and a larger width lead wouldn't work for me.

I really should get a little case for my decent stuff. What do you guys use for your "special" pens?

Oh dear, new arrival date is end of Jan.
🙁

I hope that Pauline is in the new League of Gentlemen show to make up for my disappointment
