Any tips on car rental companies we can collect a car from next summer in (probably) Milan to drive to Val di Sole, then return somewhere like Toulouse (via lots of other places) when we finish our trip?

Some of the big companies allow it, but they're unsurprisingly pretty expensive so if there's any companies that specialise in this it would be good to know.

I've done a similar thing with Hertz and Enterprise before..

We found the budget companies always quoted cheaper initially, then when you actually work it all out and add the extra fee's on it was basically the same price as the above options, but with a lot of ???? surrounding the whole deal.

Hertz was awesome, we even collected in one country and dropped off in another (It was only 50km away, but still)

And I think Hertz did a free additional driver the last time I checked, which made it even better.

In summary, stick with the well known and popular options..

I'm guessing the cross border bit will bump the price. Can you find a border town to swap cars? Eg drop off swiss side at Geneva airport and rehire french side? Just an example you prob don't want to go there.

Last experience i had of it they factored in the cost of the getting the car back to where it should be (country) at a higher rate than having it at the "wrong" location in the country.

e.g. rental from Goteborg to Helsingborg attracted a 35 quid fee for one way rental. Goteborg to Copenhagen was (i think) 190 extra. (I ended up doing Goteborg/Malmo and caught the train, which saved me 180 quid.) The only expensive thing they had to do on the return journey was a toll for a single crossing of the Öresund bridge, which (at the time) was about 35-40 quid one way.

As an aside, when i moved over here the one way rental of a van (UK to Goteborg) attracted an additional 6 or 700 one way fee on top of the 900 quid rental for a week, they would also bill me separately for any tolls/ferries/crossings and overnight accommodation... And that was 20 years ago. So i drove home and caught some extra flights!

As per Mert, cross border return charges are prohibitively expensive, I did the 2 hour trip to Germany from Apeldoorn to pick up a car in the summer so we could get to the airport the next morning.

I'd pick another car up over the border and drive the first back to the nearest Italian drop-off point.

I'm liking the idea of dropping it off and catching a cross border train to the next place.

Thanks Rick, good suggestion... I can't see how to do one-way options on their site apart from very restrictive options. However, there might be a way of combining one of their campers with train trips to make it mesh together somehow.

reeksy, I shared this as they offered point to point just recently. They do this after every summer. I couldn't see it on the website either but they have so many Euro locations I'd be surprised if it's not possible.

Edit. Here for example.

Yeah rickmeister, that's what I saw. The rally options aren't available in any of the locations we're looking at currently.
