Having a weekend away with Mrs Doh on 15/16 September - first class train, nice hotel near Kings Cross and going to see a matinee performance of Les Mis on the Saturday afternoon. Afterwards we would like to go out for a nice meal (any cuisine considered) but don't want to pay silly money (<£100 budget I'd say) and/or eat in some celebrity chef branded place (ie, Foxtrot Oscar where we have eaten before and it was unmitigated rubbish). Can anyone recommend anywhere please? Ohh, and recommendations for bars would be good too - nothing loud and lairy, just nice comfortable places where we can talk at a reasonable level and not spend our time stood in a rammed bar unable to move.
Thank you
A Wong (assuming you like Chinese)
Mon Plaisir (assuming you like French)
Rules or Boisdale (British)
Olivo (Sardinian)
The Palomar - modern eastern Mediterranean/ north African/ Israeli (Rupert St) - or The Barbary (Neal's Yard)
NOPI - Yotam Ottolenghi - shinier decor than above/ similar premis (Warwick St)
La Bodega Negra - Mexican (entry via a sex shop in Soho)
This list has a pretty wide selection (of type and price) https://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/best-restaurants-in-london
Yotam Ottolenghi
Hmm - always fancied trying one of his places - I have a few of his recipes. Interesting idea
Near where you're going,
Veeraswamy on Regents Street if you like Indian food (might be a smidge over £100 for both of you)
Fishworks in Marylebone, if you like that sort of thing. Best tuna I’ve ever had.
NOPI is good, but we prefer The Palomar - it has a better vibe, and is not so "formal".
Near where you’re going
The show is on Shaftsbury Avenue
if you like Indian food
Just a bit Unfortunately my wife gets some pretty severe reactions to some dishes (bloating) so we'd probbaly have to avoid. Thai always works though.
Clos Maggiore is awesome, possible just about within budget if you pick carefully, but wither way, it's a wonderful place to eat.
One of my colleagues went to Tozi earlier in the week, and was very complimentary - Venetian (Gillingham St, Victoria)
The show is on Shaftsbury Avenue
Gaby's Deli
Not an expert but I really enjoyed Flat Iron. - Covent Garden.
Steak and Burgers slightly left field. But amazing.
Incredible flavours and textures.
Can't book and not formal dining in anyway.
Kimchee was very enjoyable
Indian but quite different to your average high street curry
The show is on Shaftsbury Avenue
Gaby’s Deli
De Hems - bitterballen FTW.
bitterballen FTW.
Bleurgh
Just pop to the noodle shop on Oxford st!
or try barrafina on dean st for delightful tapas.... you will have to queue.
If you like chicken... Go to the Chicken shop in kentish town, no messing about, jut rotisserie chicken sold in 1/4 1/2 or while chickens. (They also do steak)
And then walk up to The Southampton Arms. One of the best pubs in London. Not connected to a brewery so always have awesome beers and ciders on.
http://www.chickenshop.com/en/kentish-town
http://www.thesouthamptonarms.co.uk/
Both less than 5mins walk from kentish town tube which is on the Northern line as is kings cross
Or if you fancy Thai have a look at The Crazy Bear. Have eaten there a few times and thought it was some of the best Thai I've had outside Thailand
Belgo Centraal in Covent Garden. You have to like mussels though. And some pokey Belgian beers too, but I like both.
Bocca di Lupo, yes it’s italian but not a plate of pasta and tiramisu kind of Italian, small or large plates and all seasonal dishes, or the Wolsey for something traditional with a sense of occasion.
Belgo”s? Seriously? It a glorified chain restraint full of tourists.
Here are a few close by theatre:
My personal best Thai close by on your budget is Kiln Soho - sit upstairs the bar/open kitchen and watch them cook on open charcoal: https://www.kilnsoho.com
Bocca mentioned above is just round the corner and great if you like Italian. If you want to go high end but save money on dessert Bocca also have a take out gelato shop right opposite called Gelupo that is pretty epic.
Lots of middle eastern recommendations - to follow the theme Ottolenghi / Nopi’s chef recently started his own place just off St James’ Square which is very tasty: http://www.scullyrestaurant.com You can get by on budget ordering carefully / sharing a dessert or bailing for Gelupo after mains.
Right next door is also Aquavit - if you fancy Michelin starred Swedish meatballs. They have a very good value pre theatre menu if you can make it before 6:30.
Belgo, Kimchee and Gaby’s mentioned above are more tourist / work lunch than treat the wife to £100 meal.
Chickenshop is epic
NOPI – Yotam Ottolenghi
T’is the Only Choice.
Dont forget his cheaper restaurant in Spitalfields ..
Moro, in Exmouth Market. Top quality Spanish/mediterranean nosh.
The pork bellies I had there were easily the best I've had anywhere ! Historic even...
There is also the quality chop house round the corner from Moro which is probably my favourite restaurant in that part of london.
Kiln Soho
Exactly what I was going to suggest. You can't book with less than 4 people though, and it can be hard to get a table. If you do go near there, it's worth popping in to Gelupo nearby for an ice cream dessert.
Or if you want something really unusual try Archipelago. I had a cricket salad in there - actually really nice!
Gaby’s mentioned above are more tourist / work lunch than treat the wife to £100 meal.
Yes, sorry, rhat was a bit tongue in cheek comment based on location
Yeah, in Nopi y’int gonna get much for £100.
Can you stretch it to £200?
There is only one place for the most delicious and healthy food you could want to eat: Maroush Express, 200 yards up the east side of Edgware Road from Marble Arch. The best Lebanese mezze and grills, but don't order too many mezze dishes or you'll have no room for the mixed grill when it arrives. A filling meal will cost around £40. Be sure to order grilled halloumi, it's heaven.
Another vote for @Jim25 suggestion of The Chicken Shop and The Southampton.
Great chicken and great pub. One of the best in London that often has my custom.
