Some places are in the wrong place. Or, rather, their names suggest that they should be located somewhere else. A couple of examples:
Thirsk - should be a coastal town in Scotland, not a market town in Yorkshire
Dewsbury - should be a genteel town in Surrey, not a satellite town of Leeds
Where else isn't in the right place?
Fort William
Royston clearly belongs in Lancashire, not Hertfordshire.
My house. It should be in the Canadian Rockies or somewhere like that, but instead I'm in a small town in SW Scotland. Utterly mystifying.
Heh glad I’m not the only one that thinks this with certain place names
Lhanbryde.
Should be in Wales, not next to Elgin.
Cockermouth?
And also Pontefract should be in Wales
Chapel-en-le-Frith
Sounds too quaint to be in the bleak, cold, wet Dark Peak!
Instead of being the hometown of the inhabitants of a Dr Seuss book, Wigtwizzle is instead a small hamlet just outside Sheffield.
What's Dunkirk doing in France? It should be in Scotland!
Royston clearly belongs in Lancashire, not Hertfordshire.
Yeah, that's a point
Lhanbryde.
Should be in Wales, not next to Elgin.
Is a new one on me, but absolutely
I've just had a call from a delivery driver in Derbyshire who can't find an address.
He should be on church close, Buxton Norfolk, not church street Buxton. He didn't bother with the sat nag because he knew where he was going...
Does that count?
Mount Florida: America not Glasgow.
California - West America not a former pit village near Falkirk.
Twechar - near Peebles and not Kilsyth.
I think Barnstaple should be in Lancashire not Devon. Absolutely agree about Pontefract as well.
Chatelherault should clearly be in the Rhone Valley in France, rather than just south of Glasgow.
Also Pennsylvania should be in America not Wiltshire. And multiple Montpelliers are in SW England not France.
London should be in the ****ing sea
is that what you mean?
Cold Christmas should be in a fairy tale, not just outside the M25
Friockheim in Angus
Strelitz in Perthshire
Jericho and Turin both near Forfar
What’s Dunkirk doing in France? It should be in Scotland!
It's a part of Nottingham.
California and New Zealand are part of Derby
What’s Dunkirk doing in France? It should be in Scotland!
There’s one just outside Bath too!
Interestingly, the “Dun” in Dunkirk comes from dune. The Dun in Dundee and many Irish place names comes from “dún” (rhymes with doon), the Gaelic word for “fort.”
Helmsdale should definitely be in Yorkshire and not Sutherland.
Moscow. Should be in Russia, not Ayrshire.
Oh, and my house should be in Scotland if they'd just move the border a mile or so please.
Bell End....should clearly be in London
Quothquan - Norway
Pettinain - France
Kilncadzow - Poland
All actually near Lanark
Ferness.
Should be on the West Coast of Scotland, with a beautiful silver beach and a quirky pub with an old fashioned red phone box outside. Instead it's a non-descript wee hamlet between Grantown and Forres.
Leeds Castle
Billericay which for years I thought was in Ireland.
Washington and Philadelphia aren't in the US, they're actually just outside Sunderland.
Leeds Castle blew my mind when I found out where it was 🤯
Liverpool does this better than anywhere else:
Fazakerly - Iraq
Kirkdale - Yorkshire, with a clothing company named after it selling fleeces
Gillmoss - Lake District, with a decent pub and an epic singletrack descent down to it
Vauxhall - is actually in London
Kensington - also actually in London
West Derby - should be in Derby
Allerton - not to be confused with Allenton in Derby
Florida........
California
They're both derived from Spanish, but seem to crop up a lot in the UK. Strata FLorida (Mid Wales), California (near Sandhurst) and California in Derby.
Leeds Castle
What's the issue, it's in Leeds.
But Moscow is in Northumberland, surely?
Bell End….should clearly be in London
Nope, it should be in ****t (Orkney)
Ely. As if that’s in Cambridgeshire and not firmly ensconced in Last of the Summer Wine.
Glastonbury should be in Zummerzet not west of an old gold mining town in Queensland.
"London should be in the ****ing sea
is that what you mean?"
Give it 30 years or so and it will be.
Cologne should be in France, not Germany
Strasbourg should be in Germany, not France
Capel le Ferne should be in France, not Kent

Both done in a day ride from Edinburgh. There's a place called Melbourne too but no sign for it.
"The North"
It should start at Inverness not Watford!
There’s a Melbourne in Northamptonshire isn’t there?
London should be in the ****ing sea
Give it 50 years.
They’re both derived from Spanish, but seem to crop up a lot in the UK. Strata FLorida
Where do you think Spain got the word from? Strata Florida is from Ystrad Fflur meaning valley of flowers. I guess someone who lived there spoke Latin...
Anyone who's been to Dewsbury will have seen the roads signs for
Ossett - no, not gusset or an ocelot
Chickenly - surely this should in Louisiana?
Flushdyke - I'd best not say anything
California also just north of Great Yarmouth, Lincolnshire also has a Miami beach!
No Place, in County Durham, shouldn’t be anywhere!
Stanley, also Co Durham, should be with Hilda in Coronation street!
Pity me, Co Durham, should be all of the UK!
Can you tell I’m from Durham!
East Linton (East Lothian) and West Linton (Scottish Borders) should at least be in the same county.
