Use them occasionally. Really useful to give updates to a group or family on Whatsapp for example when typing it would be ridiculous and take 15 minutes... Who on earth would object to leaving a voice message.

I use them more and more.  I spend most of my day staring at a screen, nice to have some actual human voice communication to mix things up.

Voicemail turned off on both phones, anyone that sends voice notes on whatsapp gets ignored. Far quicker to reply to a text that faff around listening to voice mails, espiecially if its from someone in Ireland !

That’s almost always a pocket dial IME.

Try being called Adam, and thus the first name in everyones contacts. Pretty much every voicemail I get is a pocket dial. The sound of my mum rummaging around in her handbag is a regular one. Thats why I don't ever bother listening to them

I like them.  Can’t read a text without my glasses on anyway.   What a barrel of laughs some of you must be getting agitated over how your mates want to contact you.  At least they want to speak to you!

I never answer my phone, if they leave a VM I will listen to that and then maybe call back.

It seems to remove all spam calls as the only people who leave a message are my parents.

Socially, everything is organised through WA groups and for Work everything happens in Teams chats.

Again - there is conflation here between answerphone messages (mobile or landline if you are still doing that) and voice notes on  whatsapp or messenger etc.....which is what the OP is talking (typing) about. One is someone wanting to talk to you and leaving a voice message instead. The other one is someone leaving a voice note instead of a text. I can forgive rambling in a answerphone message as you weren't necessarily expecting to leave it. Rambling in a voice note is lazy and disrespectful imo. Use it sure - but try to be concise and not to waste the recipients time just because you don't want to  waste yours typing.

Boomers - you can't tell the tone that someone is using just by text! Everything is so impersonal these days!

Also boomers - why do people keep sending me voice messages!

Send me an email if you have something technical or complicated to think about,

Why? You're just going to ****ing ignore it until I phone you either way.

But you make a good point, voice messages should be short and snappy, if you need to take notes it's the wrong medium. Same as sending war and peace in an answering machine message is annoying.

Tbh this just sounds like more people that don't understand how to select the best tool for the job.

"Hey Peas - there's a delay on the M40 and it now says I'll be there at 7ish, so no need to bust a gut getting Chris and out the door. See you soon, drive carefully"

I suppose for brevity she didn't need to know where the delay was, I didn't need to include the bit about getting Chris, and the last bit while nice is entirely superfluous. My message could have been half the size.

I'll bear in mind next time.

I had this idiot I work with leaving me voice messages last week... oh no, not on my mobile, but on the work VM system.. to tell me he was off sick. (Like I cared in the first place) But I used logic to work out that he was off sick (or preferably dead) because he wasn't online! So why did I need a message? Then, because I didn't acknowledge that, he left a Whatsapp voice message on my phone. And a text! Oh please do **** off!

My mates are the masters of the one word text, which is probably why they're my mates...

Sorry - you are thinking about a single use case and apply it to all. I'm talking about someone at home, you can hear the kettle on in the background so they are recording in a downtime moment, and just rambling on and on and on - for 4 mins to tell me they are going to get to the prearranged thing tomorrow 30 mins later than planned and what thing should they bring. At least 80% of the message is ems, errs or rambling asides. Then finished with a flourish of "I really need to get on", like it's me the recipient that's been wasting their time. Either a quick text message or engage your brain before you start recording so you can convey the message in a less glacial way.

I don't mind, and they can be very effective.

If it bothers you so much just make it known you don't like talking to people

I had no idea these were even a thing. My phone is permanently on silent so they probably wouldn't work very well😅

So did you express your preferred communication style to the sender OP?

Didn't need to. He sent a text later on. 😝

Or just moan about it on a cycling forum?

Discussion on Discussion forum shocker!
And this place has never really been a cycling forum has it, be honest. Occasionally it could be described as a cycle forum, but threads about actually cycling are rate as hens' teeth.

If it bothers you so much just make it known you don’t like talking to people

Whoosh!

Cougar, please get visual voicemail. You don’t need to be dealing with answer phone messages like it’s the 90s.

Isn't that an iPhone thing?

My wife spent 5 minutes doing a WA message to out daughter to say what we were doing – by the time she had finished we were miles out of the hotel WiFi range so she couldn’t send it.

What? Does she have a voice-only phone plan? Or overseas with no data roaming?

5/ I was driving, I could have waited till the next services, pulled off and sent a text and then restarted but then I’d have been even later and potentially she’d have rushed around and not got the new eta before leaving anyway.

"OK Google / Siri, send a text message to Daughter"

Sorry to interrupt your ageist rant but I don't mind voice messages at all. They're especially useful if I'm driving.

If it bothers you so much just make it known you don’t like talking listening to people talk at you with no agency over the one way verbiage

Fixed it.

The point here isn’t the dislike of talking to people, but about people who actively do not want to chat with you, they just want you to listen to them. It’s not a conversation. It’s not an answer phone message left because you didn’t pick up… it’s someone dictating a note to you. All fine and fun if it’s family and friends (they’ll just moan about it behind your back) but is a time and energy sapping process if used often at work.

the generalist - the bike forum, which is more than (just) cycling, runs to 4,137 pages so it's bigger than the chat forum.

A minor correction but, you know, facts...

@frankconway - I'm pretty sure the Chat forum has many more posts per thread than the Bike forum. That certainly used to be the case as it could be seen before the forum homepage was revised. Maybe one of the mods could settle it?

Boomer is a state of mind.

As for offence, your lot has been throwing shit at my lot (millennials) ever since we started thinking for ourselves, get over it snowflake 😉

By all means though, show the error in my working. Show of hands, any Gen Y who has a problem with voice messages...

But I'm not talking about the bike forum, I'm talking about cycling threads. To quote myself:

threads about actually cycling are rate as hens’ teeth.

Apologies if my counting is out, but of the 80 threads on the front page now, 5 of them are about cycling. Note that I didn't say " bikes' I said "cycling". The endless gearfreakery STW threads about cycle kit and bikes are not in my view about cycling. They are very closely related, but not actual cycling. On many occasions the only threads on the front page which are actually about cycling are weeksy jnr and the wprt

A minor correction but, you know, facts…

5/80 🤩

Really don't care how someone wants to communicate me.

Some uptight people on here

Cmon. Reread what he actually wrote, and see if you can understand it this time.

<Edit to say I can't actually find what he wrote, so I'm probably wrong>

Back when I had access to stats there was a large discrepancy in the amount of threads between the two forums, but the number of actual posts was as close to 50:50 as made no statistical difference outside of a Tory party referendum.

that’s what I was trying to do

You said you pressed the wrong icon. What with, your tongue?

That's what I was trying to do but I haven't got voice access on my phone. Or at least if I have I can't work out how to turn it on.

So press for whatsapp, press for Peas, pressed the wrong microphone icon which turned out to be better.

@pyro. Once again for those with a sense of humour bypass, it was said in jest. That's what the wink straight after (that you've failed to quote) was conveying.

For someone supposedly so concerned about tribalism you're doing a good job of trying to stir the pot here.

I care not a jot about the names of the two sub forums. My point was that only around 6% of the threads on the front page were actually about cycling.
You could change the bike forum name to " absolutely 100% about cycling" and it still wouldn't make it so.

'The way the young communicate'  I watched someone on a commuter train the other day have a full on rant to someone by voice messages, seemed like a right palava to me.

A few years back I was working for a very well known ski holiday business.  Every winter we would interview and hire all the chalet 'maids' (male and female)  for the forthcoming winter season.  During their breaks they would all go and have lunch in our Apres Ski themed restaurant.  None of them talked to each other at all, they all sat there on mb phones, not saying a word to anyone.  I would have banned phones for the day if it was me.

I guess these doughnuts coming into the work place will help keep me gainfully employed until I am done

You probably need a lifelong campaign to get everyone to call you by some other name starting with a letter much, much further on in the alphabet 🤔

Voice notes are easier for me when I'm working so send them - can't type with greasy hands

Nothing to do with self importance

All to do with clarity, communication, and efficiency,
