If I buy an item and pay for it with paypal, can I choose to use bank account funds rather than any dosh already in my paypal account?

Wouldnt you just add funds from your bank first (or after)?

It will always use any funds in you paypal account first.

What on earth is the advantage of having funds in your paypal account, not your bank account (when you can just fund paypal straight from your bank account)?
