I've just remembered something that I haven't mentioned as yet- Zach sleeps on his back. He always wakes up coughing which then turns into a scream/howl etc.
Hard to describe but it sounds like small forced-coughs.
99% of the time its a cough cough cough cough on the monitor....I think of it as the dreaded-cough noise. Both of us turn and look at each other with dread at that sound.
His diet sounds very healthy probably similar to what my two ate, however it may be a potent windy cocktail you are giving him, could it be the vegetables and fruit are making him windy and bit burpy? Could be lost of acidic fruit is making him reflux? Try some baby rice/rice or pasta to fill him up rather than the vegetables? Ours ate spag bol and chilli con carni pureed loved it! easy on spicy stuff though eh!
On teh coughing note mine both went through phases of this, seems to pass, was related to frequently snotty noses dripping into throat. It like most things has stopped.
Good luck!
turn the baby monitor off
a couple of things worth trying. do you massage him after his bath at night? there are specific massages that you do to stop wind / colic, worth looking at. it sounds more wind, so plenty of winding after the last feed too
Get some Colocynth granules but you need to persist with them. Then when that's over stock up on Ashton and Parsons powders for teething.
Oh and gradually turn the sensitivity of the monitor down as everyone is super cautious to begin with - quite rightly!
Baby monitor....
He's a tiny baby, alone in the dark.

You want peace and quiet, put him in your room or better still, in your bed.
We did it with 3 kids...
How the hell did you manage to procreate the 2nd and third time?
Thank you everyone. He only woke up once last night (11.30pm) as he was hungry - we only fed him a bland veg puree for tea.
The war is not won but by God we cornered the bugger in this theatre of operations.

brave to admit that on here.
we did that too. we even did it with our twins 🙂
It might not be wind. Our second lad did the same and in the end we took him to a physio who found out that he had a slight problem in his neck which in turn effected his hip. It wasn't a big problem and just one session sortred him out. If he had a bit of a trumatic birth they can sometimes get problems in their necks afterwards.
Another thing we found out was if the child gets anti biotics after birth this can really mess with the natural 'flora' in the gut and so the child can have a tummy ache because of this. We were adviced to give our little lad some probiotic powder in his porridge as he had a bad appitite and after 3 days he was eating like a horse.
Anyway, my advice is if it continues you should maybe consult a child physio, I believe its worth doing anyway.
By heck Brant. How do you approach conjugal rights?
Against the bathroom sink whilst brushing teeth? 😯

"Thank you everyone. He only woke up once last night"
good news...
He only woke up once last night
At 16 months, our twins have just started to regularly sleep through - 7pm till 7.30am (after a long run of illnesses kept disrupting their routines).
It is blissful (although we do still find ourselves waking early as we are so used to being up in the night now).

We had similar problems with little children sleeping in our bed.
Our second was in the spare bedroom and the third was downstairs in the lounge, ho hum...
Anyway, good to hear that all of you had a better sleep.
Get it in while you can though as the little chap still has teething to come 😆

Me.
She slept from 12-6 or 7 with one feed from like 4 weeks or something, she's been sleeping through from I dunno, 4 months? Onto the odd nightmare now mind, but she knows she gets comfort if she needs it.
All babies are different, remember that 🙂

Same with our Olivia - stiff neck = colic. Physio sorted neck = colic stopped

The marital bed isn't the only place for conjugal rights you know.
I know there are many many positions however as we get older the lazy-spoon position breaks through to the fore doesn't it? 8)
+1 for the Dr Brown bottles

Pretty much all of them when they go out to get food.
+1 for the gastric reflux suggestion. Worth investigating at least. Both ours had it, omeprazol and gaviscon kept it in check (although you get recurrences when they outgrow the omeprazol dose...) and both grew out of it.
Pretty much all of them when they go out to get food.
Yup that and why do people say silly comments like, "Oooh Gorillas never feed their young such food as lentils."
Oh FFS.
The last two nights hes been waking at circa 11pm, 2am and 5am. Only giving him breast milk calms him down and makes him sleep.
Help!!!
try gripe water
Wife's cousin (now 18) didn't sleep for more than two hours until she was 2!!
My sister's 8 month old is terrible at sleeping too - she's not had more than a few hours sleep in a block since he was born.
Not handy.
Ours was generally pretty good but we had some blips - at 3 months and a year old it got pretty bad. 12+ hours every night now without fail (unless ill).
Only giving him breast milk calms him down and makes him sleep.
Maybe he's hungry?
Babies go through mad growth spurts. They'll go merrily along eating X amount and then suddenly for a week they'll be insatiably hungry, like they've just completed a long bike ride. Could end up eating 2X or 3X food. If he drinks a lot when put on the breast, then that's what it is. If he just chews it a bit, then he just wants comfort and should be cuddled and comforted and hopefully rocked back to sleep.
Hunger = major cause of babies/toddlers waking up, imo. Their lil bodies are flooded with growth hormone at random. Our 18mo goes through a spurt every so often and wakes at 2, 3 or 4am. Otherwise, she sleeps through bar the odd nightmare, and when it's a nightmare you just comfort her and she goes back.
Growth spurts are expected and won't last long 🙂 Just make sure you get as much food down him as you can in the daytime and evening.
Oh and isn't he approaching 6mo? Are you introducing solids? Might need to ramp up the solids to fill him up.
Tend to agree with Molgrips - at his age he will be going through spurts and as he isn't on big solid meals, food is digested very quickly.
There is no simple answer, but just try to keep an eye on the night feeds and nip it in the bud the minute you think the cries are just for attention.
Unfortunately it goes with the territory - have kids, gonna be woken up sometimes.
Ohh, and cluster feed - get him used to eating lots on an evening in readiness for a long stint without food. Ours get milk at 3.30pm, big meal at 5.30pm and bedtime bottles at 7pm so they are storing up loads of food in readiness for the long sleeps.
Sounds daft(?) but if he wakes at 11pm give him pureed-veg?
I wouldn't have thought encouraging food at that time would be a good thing. Better to ride the storm and he'll learn to eat more earlier.
Have you tried a rusk biscuit or something with the bedtime milk? For a time one of ours had a bowl of cereal (weetabix) immediately before her bedtime milk.
Another thing you can try is baby rice in the bottle but I believe that is frowned upon now by health [s]interferers[/s] visitors.
Had similar with our second child. We opted for the complimentary medical route and had sessions from a cranio-sacral practioner. You can google for more info. Had definite results and much more settled baby = happy parents who sleep. Would definitely reccomend.
Yep - dropping a late feed is a case of being cruel to be kind - painful but worth it in the end!

Hmm.. possibly. Ours really wants to sleep all night though, and only wakes up if she's starving. So we feed her if we know she's on a spurt, and she goes back down again almost straight away often. So the idea of night time being sleepy time is reinforced with sleep - rather than making it a time for being miserable and fighting parents.
Just a thought. And I've only had one kid so my experience is limited 🙂

I was referring to not encouraging pureed food and stuff late at night - at that age they will still be needing milk sometimes if on a spurt.
Don't worry Hora - it really isn't like that forever. It just feels like it is in the middle of it.
Ohh, and tonight I am going to a gig, having a few beers and staying in a hotel so a nice unbroken, quiet night's sleep for me (apart from my brother snoring and farting in the bed next to me). 🙂
What's Mrs MF getting?
What's Mrs MF getting?
Knowing her as I do, catch up on some trash American telly (CSI/True Blood etc) and in bed well before Axl Rose comes on stage probably.
Or perhaps flirting on sex chat sites if I don't know her as well as I thought I did 🙂
I might pop round later, see if she needs a hand 😉
Well last night he woke at 9pm screaming so I went on a epic windathon. He farted(!) and burped in the end and slept right through.
I think the missus gives up after a while of gentle patting thinking it isn't wind.
If all else fails, gin.
Does he have formula in the evening? You could try a different brand, might help with the wind.
Also there is something called "Colief", this breaks down the lactose in the milk and make it easier for the baby to digest. Its a bit expensive so try and get it on prescription.
Jon.
Hora, I think I am the same re giving in to soon with winding - although we have a much happier boy in this house since we started on the infacol!
