we have some beech dining chairs that would look better painted-it was suggested they would benefit from 2 coats of undercoat followed by 2 coats of farrow and balls finest-any experiences?

Clean with wire wool and white spirit to get rid of polish and varnish first.
Oh, and fix any slightly loose joints first, if they move the paint may crack.

Make sure you use f&b undercoat if you use their finish
