[Closed] OT Wrist injury - what to do???

Been resisting wife's prompts to go to A&E...

Left wrist is slightly swollen, sore to painfull when flexing fingers, and very painful flexing thumb.

Dont remember smacking it, so can't see how it could be broken. Thought the swelling and discomfort would go away with overnight rest, but changing gear on the car / opening doors etc are quite painfull.

Trip to A&E (can they do anything if not broken?), or MU?

Have you got a minor injuries unit nearby? Better than going to A&E as it's less strain an the NHS and should be a shorter wait. They see loads of this sort of thing so should be able to give good advice.

Get down to Boots and buy some wrist strapping. I've broken my left wrist three times (its now very powerful) and you KNOW when you've broken it - twice it didn't really hurt but you just know.

It sounds possibly worse to me- like tendons etc?

A&E. I hurt my wrist about 3 - 4 years ago. Tried to stop a drunk mate falling over. Both of us ended up on the floor with my hand under him. Still not right now. There are lots of small bones in the wrist and hand, if they get damaged they can stop the blood supply to the others, which in turn leads to long term damage.

I'm thinking tendons - but am getting a crunchy feeling on flexing fingers ๐Ÿ˜

That's been my approach so far - sans ibuprofen...

... but its getting worse, not better

Docs first (it'll save time sat in A&E). From this if he/she says 'go then go to A&E. IMO.

From my experience I'd disagree with some of the advice above. I broke mine several years ago, went to the GP who said it was a sprain. Went back three times before getting referred for xray, then to a specialist. A mere 2 years after the original visit to the docs I was in for surgery.

The minor injuries unit see dozens of sprains and breaks every day and will probably xray straight away. I strongly suspect they'll give you a wrist support and suggest ibuprofen but best to check.

Get down to A&E and have them look at it, failing that, hold it up closer to your monitor so that the experts here can offer more internet diagnoses.
